Koh Phangan is not an island where you only go to the Full Moon Party.

In fact, it's one of the most versatile places in all of Thailand - you can spend a week here purely swimming, another week doing yoga and wellness, or you can do it all as a mix of beaches, boat trips and nightlife.

It's this combination that I think is the main reason so many people stay longer than originally planned.

You may not get the wow-effect on Koh Phangan like you do in Krabi or Ang Thong National Park. But you'll definitely find peace, quiet and good tourist facilities here.

Beaches: what are they really like?

On Koh Phangan, it makes no sense to look for one "best beach". It works much better to pick and choose according to what you want - and to rotate between several of them during your stay.

  • πŸ‘‰ For a relaxed swim and a longer stay, the bigger beaches tend to work best - we liked Haad Yao, Salad and Rin Nai the best.
  • πŸ‘‰ If you're looking for smaller and nicer beaches for a few hours, Secret Beach or Malibu Beach make more sense, but expect them to fill up quickly.
  • πŸ‘‰ For an iconic hike, head to Koh Ma (Mae Haad), where you can walk over to the islet on a sandy promontory - but the tides are crucial here.
  • πŸ‘‰ Then in the evening, it makes sense to move to Zen Beach (sunset vibe) or Haad Rin Beach if you want to combine the beach with nightlife.
  • πŸ‘‰ If you're looking for a quieter and prettier part of the island with better swimming, it's worth heading east - specifically to the Thong Nai Pan area ( Yai and Noi beaches).

What the beaches have in common

  • fine sand (mostly without rocks)
  • more natural than resort style
  • sunbeds are not standard (mostly just at the bars)

Food and drink prices on Koh Phangan are similar to neighbouring Koh Samui:

  • Food: approx 150 thb main course (Thai food)
  • sandwiches, burgers: approx. 250 thb
  • fresh / shake: approx. 150 thb
  • drink: approx. 220 thb
  • coconut: 100 thb

Tide (the most important thing)

The beaches on Koh Phangan are very tide prone and can completely change the experience.

  • The πŸ‘‰ times shift every day
  • πŸ‘‰ there is no "morning low tide / afternoon high tide"
  • πŸ‘‰ we tracked the exact times on tide-forecast.com/Ko-Pha-Ngan

Beaches in the west and north of the island where the water is shallower are more susceptible.

  • Koh Ma can be passable or not
  • Secret Beach and the western beaches (Haad Yao, Salad Beach) vary considerably

West vs. East

πŸ‘‰ West Coast - Haad Yao, Salad Beach, Secret Beach, Zen Beach, Mae Haad Beach

  • better accessibility
  • more restaurants
  • but more frequent low tide

πŸ‘‰ East - Thong Nai Pan Noi, Thong Nai Pan Yai, Than Sadet, Haad Yuan, Bottle Beach

  • better swimming
  • fewer people
  • worse accessibility (farther from the port and the biggest cities of the island)

Partying and nightlife - how it really works on Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan has a reputation as a party island, but the reality is much more colourful. There's not one "party", but several completely different scenes - and if you don't understand them, you may end up at an event that doesn't suit you at all.

Basic breakdown:

  • large mass events
  • jungle festivals
  • smaller parties and bars
  • and the totally out of the way "zen vibe" nights

Full Moon Party - the biggest event on the island

Held at Haad Rin Beach, which is a pretty normal beach outside of party weeks, but turns into one big open-air party during the event.

πŸ‘‰ how it's run and what it is:

  • From about 8pm, the beach starts to fill up
  • Peak around midnight-2:00 a.m.
  • ends in the morning around 6:00 a.m.

πŸ‘‰ Reality:

  • thousands of people
  • loud music from multiple stages (different types of music)
  • lots of alcohol

πŸ’‘ my experience:

  • it's an experience worth seeing once, but I probably wouldn't go a second time. I find it more interesting the club scene on Koh Samui or maybe Ibiza
  • I wrote up our experiences in a blog post: Full Moon Party - worth a visit?

🎟️ Admission:

  • 200 thb (pay at the door)
  • no official presale
  • there are a lot of fake "ticket" sites
  • in reality, you always pay on the spot

πŸ“… when it takes place:

Half Moon Festival - often better than Full Moon

Held in the jungle inland near Ban Tai, this is a completely different type of event.

πŸ‘‰ what to expect:

  • a stage in the jungle
  • light show
  • a more organized environment - DJs and specific musicians are always scheduled on specific dates

πŸ‘‰ difference from Full Moon:

  • smaller crowds
  • better and organized production
  • less chaos
  • more of a traditional open-air concert

🎟️ Admission:

πŸ“… when it takes place:

Jungle Experience - the classic "Phangan jungle party"

A traditional jungle party, one of the oldest on Koh Phangan.

The party is attended by a mix of travellers and people staying longer on the island.

It takes place inland in the Ban Tai district.

πŸ‘‰ What to expect:

  • open-air party in the jungle
  • DJ sets
  • lights, decorations

🎟️ Admission:

πŸ“… when it takes place:

  • 1x a month always at the beginning or at the end
  • exact dates on the official website: jungle-experience.com

OXA Jungle Party - a more modern party scene

One of the best alternatives if you don't want mainstream and very popular lately.

It takes place inland in the Ban Tai district.

πŸ‘‰ vibe:

  • jungle combination
  • More like younger people

πŸ‘‰ vibe:

  • jungle + beach combination
  • 3 stages in the jungle
  • more like a mix of contemporary music
  • more modern crowd

🎟️ Admission:

  • from 400 thb
  • the earlier you buy, the cheaper the admission is, official sales site: oxaphangan.com

πŸ“… When it takes place:

Black Moon Culture - psytrance scene

Smaller alternative events, usually in the interior of the Ban Tai district.

Not for everyone, but if it fits, it's usually one of the top experiences.

πŸ‘‰ Music:

  • psytrance
  • progressive

🎟️ entry:

  • 700 thb
  • pay at the door

πŸ“… when it takes place:

  • 1x a month, when the month is new

Utopia - the big jungle rave scene

If you want something more than the usual Phangan parties, Utopia Events is one of the most exciting things happening at the moment.

πŸ‘‰ What it is:

Utopia is not one club or a regular party. It's a series of big events and festivals that take place a few times a year in different locations around the island - most often in the jungle area or around Thong Nai Pan.

  • It's not a "night at the bar".
  • it's a full-fledged open-air festival

πŸ‘‰ What it looks like in practice:

  • a huge stage in the jungle
  • a powerful sound system
  • lights, projections, fire show
  • international DJ lineup

πŸ‘‰ What to expect:

  • 1 big stage (not chaos like Full Moon)
  • "tribe" vibe - a community of people for the music
  • chill zones, bars, food
  • a very visual and "festival" experience

πŸ‘‰ Music:

  • psytrance
  • techno
  • progressive

🎟️ entry:

πŸ“… when it takes place:

  • 1-2 times a month
  • usually from 9pm to late morning
  • exact dates on the official website: utopia-events.com

Smaller parties and bars (often underrated)

πŸ‘‰ Original Pool Party (Coral Bungalows)

  • free entry
  • Lots of social vibe

πŸ‘‰ Loi Lay Floating Bar

  • smaller venue on the pier
  • house / deep house

πŸ‘‰ Reality:
these events often make more sense than big parties

Zen Beach - the other face of the island

This is crucial - and most guidebooks completely ignore it. The beautiful, laid-back Zen Beach in the west of Koh Phangan.

It's not a party, but:

  • Music
  • dancing
  • community
  • a beach popular for sunsets
  • naturist beach
  • overall very liberal and relaxed atmosphere

There's actually only one bar where there's no cover charge.

Totally different from the mass organised parties and this is where we liked it best.

How to choose the right party

πŸ‘‰ You want a "must experience"
β†’ Full Moon Party

πŸ‘‰ you want better music and organisation
β†’ Half Moon or Utopia

πŸ‘‰ You want jungle electronics
β†’ Jungle Experience / OXA

πŸ‘‰ want a smaller event
β†’ Pool Party / Loi Lay

πŸ‘‰ You don't want a party, but a vibe
β†’ Zen Beach

Most common mistakes

1️⃣ Only go to Full Moon Party
β†’ only see a small part of the island

2️⃣ Underestimate logistics (accommodation vs. Haad Rin)
β†’ transportation during the party is chaos

3️⃣ Ignore smaller events
β†’ often a better experience

Boat trips and snorkelling

One of the best activities to do all day - especially if you don't want to be on one beach all the time.

There are daily speedboats from Koh Phangan, operated by local tourist agencies, but it has to be said that the boat trips and snorkelling on offer are slightly better from Koh Samui.

These are the two trips that made the most sense to us.

Find all boat trips in Phangan

Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan

A very popular combination especially for snorkelling - these two islands are among the best snorkelling spots in all of Thailand with the most beautiful water.

But at the same time, Koh Tao is big enough that it makes sense to go here for a few days.

πŸ‘‰ Plan an organized day trip especially if you want to have one accommodation on Koh Phangan and enjoy only 1 day of snorkeling.

  • Usually 6-8 hours
  • usually lunch included
  • prices around 3 000 thb
  • πŸ‘‰ Book a trip on GetYourGuide.com

Ang Thong Marine Park

The most common trip from the island.

What to expect:

  • Limestone Islands
  • kayaks
  • Prospects
  • lagoon

The whole day is quite intense, but at the same time well organized. It is not a "tourist trap" but a real highlight of the area.

If you only have time for one activity, this will most likely be it.

  • πŸ‘‰ Detailed information and our experience of the trip in the article Ang Thong Marine National Park
    • We started from Koh Samui, but the organization and length of the trips are almost the same from Koh Phangan
  • πŸ‘‰ Book a trip on GetYourGuide.com

Yoga, wellness and Sri Thanu

Koh Phangan is one of the main yoga centers in Southeast Asia.

The main area is Sri Thanu on the west coast of the island about 10-15 minutes drive from the main port of Thong Sala.

Here you will find:

  • Yoga studios
  • breathwork
  • sound healing
  • detox programs

πŸ‘‰ how it works:

  • drop-in lessons approx. 400 thb
  • retreats for several days

πŸ‘‰ familiar places:

  • Samma Karuna
  • Orion Healing
  • One Yoga

πŸ‘‰ Reality:
It's not an attraction, it's a community - many people stay for weeks

Hotels in Sri Thanu

Cooking classes (the best "quiet day")

Cooking class is exactly the type of activity that most people underestimate - and then it's one of their best experiences.

On Koh Phangan, it works pretty much the same as elsewhere in Thailand, but with smaller groups and a more personal approach.

πŸ‘‰ How it works:

  • Often start at the market (selection of ingredients)
  • move to a school or open-air kitchen
  • preparing 3-5 dishes (pad thai, curry, mango sticky rice...)

πŸ‘‰ Length:

  • approx. 3-5 hours

πŸ‘‰ why it makes sense:

  • a break between beaches
  • activity even in bad weather
  • something to "take home"

πŸ‘‰ indicative price:

  • approx. 2 500 thb

You can book cooking courses at tourist agencies in the resorts, at a slightly higher price in the hotel or also via GetYourGuide.com.

Views, waterfalls and inland (quick but worth it)

Koh Phangan isn't an island for hiking, but a few places make sense as short stops during the day - ideally combined with beaches.

πŸ‘‰ The most common combination is:

  • Namtok Phaeng - waterfall + a short hike to the viewpoint (Dom Sila) from where you can get one of the best views of the island
  • Than Sadet - more of a natural area with a river, which you can combine with a visit to Haad Sadet Beach

πŸ‘‰ Reality:

  • don't expect huge waterfalls
  • outside of the rainy season, there is less water

πŸ‘‰ how to plan for it:

  • stop for 30-60 minutes
  • ideally when crossing between beaches

Driving inland and stopping occasionally to take photos of the dense jungle are also fine.

Scooter loop and "day without a plan"

Honestly - one of the best things you can do in Phangan is to not have a plan.

πŸ‘‰ you rent a scooter
you ride around the north, west of the island

πŸ‘‰ and in between:

  • coffee
  • smoothie
  • view

This is exactly the style in which Phangan works best.

What not to expect too much here

Don't expect much in the way of water sports, night markets or shopping malls.

  • There are, but they're not typical
  • The island is still not modern resort-style like Phuket or Koh Samui

Koh Phangan is more like:

  • Natural
  • relaxed
  • less commercial

Quick conclusion

Koh Phangan is not about "getting as much done as possible".

πŸ‘‰ It's about:

  • combine
  • Slow down
  • give yourself space

And that's why it works differently than most Thai islands.

Koh Phangan is visually pretty, but activities in the mainland are really more of a short stop - beaches, parties and yoga are the main ones.
