Weather in Koh Phangan and best time to go
Koh Phangan has a very similar climate to Koh Samui - but with one important difference: the more "wild" nature of the island means that you will feel the weather here a bit more intensely (especially in the rainy season and on the less protected beaches).
What is the climate like on Koh Phangan?
Koh Phangan has a typical tropical climate:
- high temperatures all year round
- high humidity
- alternating dry and rainy seasons
Temperatures hold for most of the year:
- 28-32 °C during the day.
- at night: around 24 °C
In other words - there is no "winter" on Koh Phangan.
But what changes significantly:
- the amount of rainfall.
- the quality of the sea
- cloud cover
And that's what determines whether you enjoy your holiday to the fullest or have to compromise.
What is the weather like on Koh Phangan during the year?
Like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan has a "shifted" season compared to the rest of Thailand.
Put simply:
- January - August → mostly stable weather
- September → transitional period
- October - November → main rainy season
- December → gradual improvement
👉 If you're comparing with Phuket or Krabi, expect the complete opposite seasonality.

💡 One of the few places in Thailand where the "summer season" works
Book your hotel early for summer
September
- Transition period
- more instability
- more frequent and violent showers
- still relatively good sea
💡 Could be great, could be worse - a bit of a lottery
October - December
- main rainy season
- Frequent heavy downpours (every day)
- rain typically 1-2 hours in the afternoon or evening
- but can be cloudy for several days in a row
- sea worse, muddy, lots of algae
💡 Weakest period for beach holidays
👉 It's often better to go to Phuket or Krabi at this time.
How much does it rain on Koh Phangan?
Important: tropical rain ≠ all day straight.
Typically:
- short, intense showers

BUT in October-November:
- rain can be prolonged.

Worse:

- colour of the sea
👉 For example, beaches like Haad Rin or Bottle Beach look completely different in high season than in the rainy season.
