London Stansted Airport in a nutshell
Stansted is London’s third-largest airport, serving mainly low-cost airlines. Ryanair operates its largest hub here, accounting for over 90 per cent of the airport’s flights.
The airport is situated almost exactly halfway between London and Cambridge.
Despite being over 64 km from central London, Stansted Airport is popular for its simplicity, with just a single terminal and shorter walking distances than at Gatwick (LGW) or Heathrow (LHR).

If I understand correctly, even to change at Stansted with hand luggage only, I have to go through the belt check and therefore have ETA authorisation?
Yes.
Yes, that's right. Stansted doesn't have a direct transit option at all - you always have to go through immigration.
