Getting around Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is not an island where you "just take a taxi and work" as you are used to from other places in Thailand.

Transportation works a little differently here - it's more authentic and local, but it's also more expensive. Especially if you only travel by taxi.

👉 My experience: if you want freedom, you can't do without a scooter or a car.

Quick Decision (what to choose)

What will be the best way for you to travel around the island?

On Koh Phangan, as in all of Thailand, you drive on the left.

🛵 Scooter (the most common choice)

  • best flexibility
  • cheapest
  • ideal for the whole island
  • you don't have to deal with anything in advance

👉 for most people = the best solution

🚗 Car (comfort + safety)

  • better for a longer stay
  • safer than a scooter
  • but limited availability - better to deal ahead
  • no large international car rental companies operating here

👉 if you don't want to deal with the risk of falling or if you plan to go inland often (very steep roads)

🚐 Taxi / songthaew

  • simple but expensive
  • no classic taxis, only shared vans
  • need to bargain

👉 only good for transfers to/from the port

❌ Grab / Bolt

  • no mobile apps work on Koh Phangau

💬 How did you get around Koh Phangan? Scooter or car? Feel free to post your experience in the comments below this article - it's your experience that helps other travellers the most.

Renting a scooter (most flexible)

You'll only see a fraction of the island without a scooter (or other transportation of your own).

A scooter is rented by 90% of tourists on Koh Phangan, and if you have experience driving a scooter in Asia, it's probably the easiest option.

How it works in practice

There are rental shops everywhere - in Thong Sala (by the harbour), by the beaches and at hotels.

You arrive, pick up your scooter and leave in a few minutes.

Booking in advance doesn't make sense and often isn't even possible - even during high season the availability of scooters locally is good.

Scooter prices

These are the approximate prices for 1 day scooter rental on Koh Phangan:

  • 250 thb for the weakest scooter up to 125 cc (strongly not recommended due to hilly roads)
  • 500 thb for a scooter up to 160 cc (a good compromise if everyone has their own scooter)
  • 1 000 thb for a scooter up to 300 cc (recommended if you will be travelling on one scooter)

💡 Some rental companies give various discounts for longer rentals over 5 days.

Driving on Koh Phangan (don't underestimate this one)

On the map it looks easy. In reality:

  • very steep hills inland.
  • sharp curves
  • concrete sections instead of asphalt
  • extremely slippery after rain

Accommodation by location

But at the same time the roads are quite wide, well maintained and very well signposted.

👉 typically problematic routes:

  • Thong Sala - Haad Rin
  • East Coast
  • inland routes

If you've never driven a scooter, definitely consider a car.

What to watch out for

  • Take a photo of the scooter when you take delivery
  • helmet is standard (and use it)
  • you officially need an international driving licence (for possible police checks)

Why is a scooter more practical than a car?

  • Wide availability of rentals without the need for reservations
  • easy parking anywhere

Car rental (underrated option)

This is a surprisingly good solution if you don't want to deal with a scooter.

I don't have much experience with a scooter and after reading reviews about steep roads, I preferred to play it safe and book a car.

How it works

Koh Phangan:

  • There are no big international rental companies
  • classic comparison sites like Booking.com don't work
  • booking is possible on the spot - most scooter rental companies also offer car rental, but availability of available cars tends to be worse

Everything is local.

💡 Tip: read also my experience with renting a car on Koh Samui.

My experience

As car availability can be worse locally, I preferred to book a car in advance.

I chose from several local car rental companies based on reviews:

In the end, I booked the car through Krembo because the best communication with them was via WhatsApp.

  • Fast communication (they answered all messages and questions)
  • car ready exactly on the spot as agreed
  • everything was professional and worked similarly to the bigger rental companies

Definitely better than dealing with them on the spot for me.

After arriving by ferry from Koh Samui we just found our car in the car park as instructed and sorted out payment and all the paperwork with the attendant.

  • 👉 Most rental companies require a cash deposit around 10 000 thb
  • 👉 the actual payment for the rental was done online by credit card
  • 👉 no credit or debit card required

Pricing

The price depends on the size of the car and the length of the rental. The longer the rental period, the lower the daily rate.

  • approx. 1 000 thb for a small car
  • from 2 500 thb for an SUV

Does a car make sense?

✅ Yes:

  • you are afraid to drive a scooter
  • you're driving two or more
  • you want comfort (air conditioning, lots of luggage)

❌ More likely not:

  • you want low-cost
  • you're used to a scooter

💡 Reality:

Before the trip, I read on various forums that renting a car on Koh Phangan makes absolutely no sense.

The roads are supposedly chaotic, the drivers are inconsiderate and you can't park your car anywhere.

But my experience is a little different:

  • the roads are very good but steep - better a car than a scooter
  • the drivers, on the other hand, are quite considerate
  • parking is definitely better with a scooter, but even with a car you can always park along the main road
    • expect only a slightly longer walk to the beach
  • we only experienced paid parking (200 thb per car) in Haad Rin during the Full Moon Party

How do the gas stations work here?

Gas stations here work like everywhere else in Thailand.

On the main roads, especially around Thong Sala, you will find the classic large modern petrol stations like Shell etc.

I recommend refuelling at these petrol stations:

  • there is no doubt about the quality of the petrol
  • lowest price
  • always with an attendant whom you pay directly for the petrol

In addition, literally every few hundred metres around the island you will come across impromptu sales of petrol in glass litre bottles.

The price is always 50 thb (that's more than a big gas station), and you can't be sure if the gas isn't diluted with water.

Shared taxi / classic taxi / songthaew

Forget the classic taxi as you know it. That doesn't work at all on Koh Phangan.

📱 Taxi via agencies

This is the surest form of transport if you know you'll be travelling in the evening or to more remote places.

  • Arrangement via hotel or WhatsApp
  • works all over the island

How does it work?

In all villages and towns you will find many travel agencies that offer these services.

Stop in them, take the contact on WhatsApp and the arrangement will be made operatively.

It is always advisable to take multiple contacts - it may happen that the driver you have arranged with will have a better job and you will have to wait longer.

🚐 Songthaew (shared delivery)

The main "public" transport is the classic pick-ups with benches, which in Thailand are called "songthaew".

They run on fixed routes, most often:

  • Thong Sala - Haad Rin
  • Thong Sala - Srithanu - Haad Yao

💰 Prices:

  • as a tourist you will ALWAYS have a different price than the locals
  • we never managed to use songthaew as a classic public transport (as you know for example from Phuket)
  • you have to negotiate the price
  • 350 thb to 500 thb for the route Thong Sala - Haad Rin
  • 200 thb up to 400 thb for shorter routes

Payments only in cash to the driver.

Most shared taxis are always at Thong Sala wharf. From there, songthaew will take you anywhere you ask - it just depends on the price you manage to negotiate.

🛵 Mototaxi

Motorbike taxis operate mainly at Thong Sala harbour. We didn't encounter them much elsewhere.

  • fast transfers for short distances
  • ideally without large luggage
  • prices lower than songthaew, but even here you have to bargain

❌ Grab / Bolt / other mobile apps

On Koh Phangan, mobile ride-sharing apps don't work yet.

The situation is similar on Koh Tao, while on the larger Koh Samui they work without problems (they're just expensive).

🚤 Water taxis (often neglected but important)

This is a typical thing for Koh Phangan.

When you take advantage of

  • Remote beaches without roads (for example Haad Yuan)
  • transfers between beaches

Sometimes the only option or the fastest option.

Prices

It always depends on how you manage to negotiate. There are no fixed prices.

Often you pay for the boat, not the place.

  • usually 500 thb / 1 person / shorter distance

You can also arrange a tour of different beaches - in that case prices range between 2 000 thb and 5 000 thb.

Reality

  • no timetables
  • dependent on the weather
  • on the beach you will always notice the typical Thai "longtail boat"
  • just come near and the owner will take you in right away

Standard public transport

Koh Phangan has no standard public transport network as you know it from big cities or more developed regions.

There are no bus routes with regular schedules or anything like that.

How transport works in practice

This is an important point to consider on Koh Phangan.

  • Distances are deceiving
  • 10 km ≠ 10 minutes

For example:

  • Thong Sala → Haad Rin: approx. 30 min
  • Thong Sala → North of the island: 45+ min

The main problem is the very rugged terrain, steep hills and often very heavy traffic.

Find a hotel by the beach

The most common mistakes

1️⃣ Underestimating scooter steering
Hills and curves are not for beginners.

2️⃣ Relying on taxis
It's expensive and limited.

3️⃣ Unreserved car in season
May be sold out.

4️⃣ Failure to return in the evening
Some parts of the island are without transport in the evening.

If you only deal with transport by taxi, it is definitely essential to have an internet connection at all times for possible communication via WhatsApp.

We handle this via Airalo's eSim - get it at airalo.com too.

Summary: how to get around Koh Phangan

If you want a simple decision:

  • 🛵 best choice → scooter
  • 🚗 safer alternative → car
  • 🚐 emergency solution → taxi / songthaew
  • 🚤 add-on → water taxi

Without your own means of transport you won't see the best of the island.
