Haad Rin Beach
Haad Rin Beach is the most famous beach on Koh Phangan - the place most people come here for in the first place.
At first glance, it's a pretty nice beach right in the centre of the resort. But once a month, it turns into the most famous beach in all of Thailand - because this is where the original Full Moon Party takes place.
When we visited Koh Phangan, we also went here. I describe our feelings about this legendary event in the article What the Full Moon Party really looks like.

Is it worth visiting Haad Rin Beach?
✅ Yes, if:
- you want to see the island's most famous beach
- you are planning a Full Moon Party
- you want a good swimming beach
❌ Not likely if:
- you are looking for peace and quiet and minimal people
- you want an "authentic" island without the party vibe
- you only have a few days and want the best of the beaches
💡 Alternative:
For quieter and often nicer beaches try Haad Yao or Zen Beach.
There's also a boat taxi directly from Haad Rin Beach to the completely remote Haad Yuan Beach, which we unfortunately didn't manage to visit, but from the photos it looks beautiful. The boat taxi costs whichever price you negotiate - we were quoted 1 000 thb for the return trip. Do you have your own experience and photos? Share with us in the comments below, thanks!
What exactly is Haad Rin (Nok vs. Nai)
👉 Frequent confusion:
- Haad Rin Nok = Main Beach (Full Moon Party)
- Haad Rin Nai = quieter sunset beach on the other side
This article addresses Haad Rin Nok, which is what most people think of as "Haad Rin Beach".
What is the beach outside Full Moon Party
This one will surprise most people:
- fine, light sand
- good swimming conditions
- relatively clean water
- significantly less people
Honestly: outside of party days, this is one of the best easily accessible beaches on the island.
But - the east coast of Koh Phangan often has waves, so if you prefer calmer seas, choose the west coast.
There are plenty of food and drink stalls and cafes along the beach even outside the Full Moon Party.
What is the reality during the Full Moon Party
In a nutshell:
- Thousands of people
- music all over the beach
- bars, stage, lights
- mess in the morning
You can find our personal experience of the Full Moon Party in a separate article on our blog.
When to go (key decision)
👉 Biggest difference:
- outside Full Moon → normal beach
- during Full Moon → party spot
👉 Practically:
- best: morning and mid-morning
- worst: the day after the party
Haad Rin Walking Street
The main street behind the beach is one of the leading attractions in this city.
The pedestrian area contains a huge number of services:
- restaurants, bars, street food
- shops
- livelier atmosphere in the evening
👉 It's not an attraction, but:
- important background
- the reason why Haad Rin is a practical location
Haad Rin Walking Street is most alive during the Full Moon Party, but outside of that, it's open.
Where to stay (major decision)
Remember that even outside of Full Moon Party dates, Haad Rin is the liveliest resort on all of Koh Phangan.
Stay at Haad Rin if:
- you want to be close to the party
- you want the evening life
Don't live on Haad Rin if:
- you want peace and quiet
- you prefer beaches and excursions
In that case, you're better off:
- Haad Yao
- North of the island
How to get there
The town of Haad Rin lies at the southernmost tip of Koh Phangan.
The centre is full of impromptu car parks where you can park your rental car (usually a fee 200 thb).
You can park your scooter in multiple spots anywhere along the main road for free.
There tend to be quite a few shared taxis, but the price always depends on what you negotiate.
I describe our travel experience in detail in the article Transportation on Koh Phangan.
There's also a regular ferry dock to Koh Samui right in Haad Rin (on the other coast from Haad Rin Beach, but only about a 20 minute walk).
The Haad Rin - Koh Samui boats are admittedly more expensive and less frequent than those from the larger Thong Sala port, but again you'll save money on taxi fares.
