Haad Yao Beach

Haad Yao Beach

Haad Yao is one of the biggest and probably the best beaches on Koh Phangan.

A long stretch of light sand, a quieter atmosphere than the south of the island and the perfect mix of comfort + tropical vibe.

We only visited Haad Yao once for a walk and lunch at one of the many restaurants.

But if we were looking for an ideal base for accommodation and a nice swim, I would choose this place next time.

Find hotels on the beach

Is Haad Yao worth a visit?

Yes, if:

  • you want a long beach suitable for swimming and walking
  • you want a quieter part of the island without the party chaos
  • you want to live by the sea at reasonable prices

❌ More likely not, if:

  • you are looking for a completely secluded "hidden beach"
  • you want the dramatic scenery of the east coast
  • you want nightlife and a party atmosphere

💡 Alternative:
For more tranquility try the east of the island where we stayed at the Panviman resort.

What is the beach like in reality?

  • One of the longest beaches in the west of the island
  • fine light sand + gradual entry into the water
  • palm trees, bars, restaurants - but not crowded

👉 Compared to Haad Rin it's a whole different world - quiet, peaceful and a "normal" holiday.

Swimming and conditions

Haad Yao is one of the better beaches for swimming on Koh Phangan:

  • at low tide the water recedes a lot
  • at high tide the beach is narrow, but as it is one of the widest on the island, you will have plenty of room even at low tide
  • corals around the edges - good for light snorkelling

💡 If you want a safe swim, Haad Yao is probably the best beach on the northern half of Koh Phangan.

When to go here (and how to combine it)

  • Best for swimming: morning/morning
  • afternoon: relax, drink, quiet
  • evening: move elsewhere

👉 Ideal combination:

  • a day at Haad Yao
  • sunset and evening at Zen Beach (about 10-15 min drive)

Accommodation - why here

Haad Yao is one of the best areas on the island if you want to stay right on the beach without the exorbitant prices.

Right on the beach you will find hotels of all categories:

👉 Benefits:

  • hotels a few steps from the sea
  • good price/performance ratio
  • quiet evenings

👉 Disadvantage:

  • less choice of evening entertainment

How to get there

  • by scooter / car - approx. 20 min from Thong Sala
  • taxi - no problem, but more expensive in the evening

Access is easy, no tricky descents or jungle.

Park on the main road in the centre of the village, from where you can walk to the beach in 2-5 minutes.

You can leave your car and motorbike parked on the roadside for free. There are plenty of places for scooters right in the centre, while there are fewer places for cars and you often have to travel a few hundred metres outside the centre.

I describe our travel experience in detail in the article Transportation on Koh Phangan.

The most common mistakes

1️⃣ Bad timing of swimming
The water can be very shallow in the afternoon.

2️⃣ Expecting complete calm
It's a quiet place, but not isolated.

3️⃣ Ignoring the surroundings
Haad Yao's greatest strength is in combination with other places.
