Mae Haad Beach (Koh Ma)

Me on Ko Ma Beach

Koh Ma is one of the most iconic spots on Koh Phangan - a small island connected to Mae Haad beach by a sandy "tongue" that can be crossed on foot.

Exactly the kind of place you see in photos and want to experience for yourself.

In reality, though, a lot depends on timing. If you get it right, it will be one of the highlights of the whole island. If not, it will be "just" a nice beach.

It depends on the tide.

Is Koh Ma / Mae Haad worth a visit?

Yes, if:

  • you want to see the iconic sandbar and walk to the islet
  • you plan to snorkel (one of the best spots on the island)
  • you are looking for a photogenic spot without difficult access

❌ Not likely if:

  • you are expecting an empty beach with no people
  • you want the security of swimming at any time of the day
  • you don't want to deal with the tide

💡 Alternative:
For more confident swimming try Haad Yao or other northern beaches without depending on sandbanks.

What is Koh Ma and what is Mae Haad

  • Mae Haad Beach = beach on the mainland
  • Koh Ma = small island off the coast
  • between them is a sandbar (sandy neck)

👉 Most people say "Koh Ma", but in reality you mainly spend time on Mae Haad Beach.

When will you see the sandbar (important)

This decides the whole visit.

  • at low tide → dry sandbar on Koh Ma
  • at higher water → sandbar is underwater

Important:

  • you can almost always cross to Koh Ma
  • but sometimes you'll be dry-footed, other times in water up to your chest

Realistic:

  • low water → dry sand
  • medium → ankle to knee deep water
  • higher tide → calmly above the waist

💡 The low tide time shifts by about 50 minutes each day, there is no fixed "morning / afternoon".

We checked the exact tide times on Koh Phangan at tide-forecast.com.

Swimming - what is the reality

The beach is covered with very fine light sand and is visually really pretty.

Right on the beach you will find some expensive tourist restaurants and maybe fresh water showers for 10 thb.

  • the water is shallow
  • there is hardly any depth at low tide
  • better at high tide

Koh Ma / Mae Haad is a good place for a classic swim, but count on it being the busiest beach on all of Koh Phangan.

Less busy, but also significantly smaller and completely devoid of facilities, is the beach on Koh Ma islet.

Snorkeling (the main reason to visit)

This is the reason to come here.

  • The coral reef around Koh Ma
  • The best conditions in calm seas
  • ideally in the morning

One of the best snorkeling spots on the island. But the snorkelling on the neighbouring islet of Koh Tao, reached in 30 minutes by boat, is significantly better.

When to go here

  • less crowded: morning / mid-morning
  • best light + vibe: late afternoon
  • peak traffic: sunset

👉 Ideal is to adjust the time mainly by tide/tide, not by time of day.

How to get there

  • by scooter/car - approx. 40 minutes from the largest port of Thong Sala
  • free parking directly at Mae Haad Beach (the parking lot is big enough for cars and scooters)

Access is easy without any trekking.

Taxi availability here tends to be the best of all the beaches, but we still recommend that you make arrangements with the taxi driver or hotel for an exact time to take you back from the beach. Otherwise, you can wait tens of minutes for a free taxi.

Accommodation in the area

If you want Koh Ma within easy reach, stay in the Mae Haad area.

There are several different types of accommodation near the beach. I would recommend these:

  • 💰 Budget option - Maehaad Guesthouse
    • a cheap guesthouse by the car park with clean rooms and private bathroom/WC
  • 💎 4* resort - Maehaad Bay Resort
    • larger hotel right on the beach

👉 Benefits:

  • walking distance to Koh Ma
  • quiet part of the island
  • great base for northern beaches

👉 Disadvantages:

  • far from the rest of the island
  • no nightlife
  • mostly expensive tourist restaurants

Most common mistakes

1️⃣ Wrong timing of visit
Without checking the tide you can miss the whole sandbar effect.

2️⃣ Expectation of bathing
This is not an ideal beach for swimming.

3️⃣ Arriving at the biggest peak
Sunset = most people.

How to work it into your itinerary

👉 Ideal scenario:

  • Morning or by Koh Ma tide (sandbar + snorkeling)
  • afternoon, move to another beach (e.g. Haad Yao)
  • sunset elsewhere in the evening (e.g. Zen Beach)

Koh Ma is more of an "experience for a few hours" than a place for the whole day.
