You can never get to Koh Phangan directly by plane - you always combine flight + boat. There is no airport on the island.

Quick decision

In short - these are the 2 most common options.

The fastest option

  • flight from Bangkok / Phuket / Singapore → Koh Samui → boat (25-45 min)
  • total from Bangkok: approx. 3-5 hours

Cheapest option

  • flight/train → Surat Thani → bus + ferry
  • total: approx. 8-14 hours

How to get to Koh Phangan from Bangkok

This is the most common question.

✈️ Option 1 - via Koh Samui (fastest)

  • Flight Bangkok → Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways
    • Prices between 165 usd and 300 usd depending on the season
    • buy your ticket at bangkokair.com
  • taxi to the port (10-20 min)
    • price approx. 500 thb
  • boat to Koh Phangan
    • price from 200 thb

⏱️ total: 3-5 hours
💰 Price: highest (total around

👉 ideal if:

💸 Option 2 - via Surat Thani (best value for money)

  • flight → Surat Thani
  • transfer to Donsak Pier (approx. 1.5 h)
  • ferry to Koh Phangan (approx. 45-60 minutes)
    • bus + ferry total from 650 thb

⏱️ total: 8-10 hours
💰 Cheaper

You can buy a combined bus + ferry ticket directly from Surat Thani Airport via 12go.asia. It's both cheaper and more convenient than dealing on your own to Grab/Bolt from the airport to the port.

👉 Ideal if:

  • you are solving a budget
  • you don't mind a longer journey but don't want to spend all day

💸 Option 3 - via Chumphon (cheapest)

  • train / bus → Surat Thani
  • transfer to the port (approx. 30 minutes)
  • ferry to Koh Phangan (approx. 3.5 hours)
    • from 1 100 thb

⏱️ total: 13-16 hours
💰 significantly cheaper

🚆 Option 4 - night train to Surat Thani + ferry

  • Night train Bangkok → Surat Thani
  • morning ferry

👉 Surprisingly popular option (saves a night in the hotel)

Also possible to get off at Chumphon, but trains usually arrive there around 4:20am and you'd be waiting a long time for the ferry.

Boats to Koh Phangan - complete overview

Most people choose poorly just because they don't know the differences.

The following regular companies operate to Koh Phangan:

  • Lomprayah
  • Seatran Ferry / Seatran Discovery
  • Raja Ferry
  • Songserm
  • Lomlahkkhirin
  • Haad Rin Queen
  • Boonsiri
  • Petcherat Marina

Main marina: Thong Sala (middle of the island)
Second marina: Haad Rin (ideal for Full Moon Party)

All itineraries on Koh Phangan

Prices vary quite a lot between companies. Higher prices are paid for fast speedboats and lower for slow ferries that also carry cars.

🚤 Koh Samui → Koh Phangan

  • 20-45 minutes
  • 200 thb to 500 thb
  • dozens of connections per day
  • usually around 6:00-19:00
  • Book at 12go.asia

📍 Ports on Koh Samui:

  • Bangrak / Petcherat (best from the airport, and major areas of Koh Samui such as Bophut or Chaweng)
    • The biggest frequency
  • Maenam (north of the island, such as Meanam Beach)
    • only 6 connections a day
  • Nathon (west of the island)
    • only 3-4 connections per day

🚢 Surat Thani (mainland) → Koh Phangan

Most shipping companies offer a combo-ticket from Surat Thani URT airport (bus transfer to the port + ferry)

Some shipping companies depart from Donsak pier (about 90 minutes from the airport), some from Tapee pier (in the centre of Surat Thani - 30 minutes from the airport)

  • 2.5-4 hours (total time from airport)
  • 550 thb to 950 thb
  • dozens of connections per day
  • some services stop at Ko Samui (but very few of them)
  • Book on 12go.asia

You can of course also buy purely dock-only tickets (no airport transfers), but this is only worthwhile if you want to stay overnight in Surat Thani.

🚢 Chumphon (mainland) → Koh Phangan

A good option if you're coming from Bangkok by train or bus (Chumphon is significantly closer than Surat Thani).

Most shipping companies offer a combo-ticket from Chumphon CJM station or airport (bus transfer to the port + ferry)

  • 4-5 hours (total time from Chumphon station)
  • 1 100 thb
  • approx. 6-7 times a day
  • some services stop at Koh Tao
  • Book on 12go.asia

🚤 Koh Tao → Koh Phangan

The nearest islet, popular for its crystal clear water, has frequent connections with Koh Phangan.

  • 1-1.5 hours
  • 450 thb to 700 thb
  • dozens of connections a day
  • Book at 12go.asia

How's it going at the port?

This is the same everywhere - in ports on Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, the mainland and Koh Tao.

You walk in, find the shipping company counter, show the receipt on your mobile (or buy on the spot - but availability can be a problem in high season).

You get a paper ticket, a sticker on your T-shirt with your destination on it, which the staff can easily distinguish and direct you to the right boat.

There's also a tag for your suitcase, which you hand in before boarding.

You can sit anywhere on the ship where there is a seat available.

Comparison of shipping companies (what to really choose)

🚀 Lomprayah (best overall)

  • fast catamarans, but sometimes also very small speedboats
  • Koh Samui → Phangan: ~30 min
  • Mainland → Phangan: ~2.5-3.5 h
  • usually the most expensive option

👉 My choice if:

  • I'm dealing with time
  • I want reliability

⚖️ Seatran (best compromise)

  • bigger boats
  • about 45-90 min from Samui
  • more stable in waves
  • cheaper

💰 Raja Ferry (cheapest)

  • large ferries
  • older boats
  • approx. 2.5-4 h from the mainland

👉 cheap but slow

💸 Songserm

  • cheaper alternative to speedboats
  • similar to Lomprayah, but fewer routes and fewer frequencies

⚡ Lomlahkkhirin

  • smaller speedboats
  • fast, but more swing

🎉 Haad Rin Queen

  • direct boat to Haad Rin
👉 Perfect for Full Moon Party

The good news is that you don't have to visit the websites of each company, but compare all the prices and itineraries through search engines where you can buy the ticket directly.

I always use the time-tested 12go.asia many times throughout Southeast Asia.

You don't need to print the ticket, just always show the mobile ticket at the ticket office at the dock and you will be given a paper ticket to use for boarding.

Compare prices and buy a ticket - 12go.asia

Combo ticket (a crucial thing that most people underestimate)

👉 bus + ferry / train + ferry / flight + ferry

Advantages:

  • one purchase
  • connections handled by the carrier
  • less stress

Realistically the best way for most journeys.

At Surat Thani URT or Chumphon CJM airport, or at the train or bus station, find the counter of the shipping company you have a ticket with.

Show the confirmation on your mobile phone.

You will be given a paper ticket and a sticker on your t-shirt with your destination.

You don't have to worry about anything else and the staff will direct you to the buses and boats.

  • 👉 Cheaper than buying a ferry from the port and dealing with airport/railway station transportation via Grab/Bolt
  • 👉 Combo-Ticket can be booked through 12go.asia

Most common mistakes

1️⃣ Wrong port
You arrive in Thong Sala but your hotel is on Haad Rin → 30 min taxi extra.

2️⃣ Underestimating the weather
In October-November there can be big waves → speedboat not ideal.

3️⃣ Full Moon Party without reservations
Boats tend to sell out.

Practical tips to save you time

  • Always watch the last boat departure
  • allow extra time for transfers
  • on Samui, choose Bangrak Pier (closest to the airport)
  • in waves, choose a larger ferry instead of a speedboat

Summary - how to get to Koh Phangan

  • ✈️ fastest → Koh Samui + speedboat
  • 💸 Cheapest → Surat Thani + ferry
  • ⚖️ best compromise → Surat Thani + speedboat
  • 🚤 top carriers → Lomprayah / Seatran
