Grand Baie is one of the largest resorts in the northern half of Mauritius and a major centre for tourist services or cruises.

The town is particularly ideal for those travelling around Mauritius on their own, as there are plenty of cheap apartments, plenty of shops and a large bus station.

Beaches and swimming

There is only one relatively small, busy and not very nice public beach right in Grand Baie.

It's ideal for a quick morning or evening swim, but if you want to spend the day by the sea, we'd rather recommend a trip to nearby Mon Choisy or Trou aux Biches, where there are much nicer beaches.

Shops, restaurants and cruises

The main street along the seafront in the centre is full of restaurants, street stalls selling local snacks and small shops selling food, souvenirs or beach equipment.

There is also a huge Super U hypermarket very close to the centre (within 5 minutes walk).

There are also casinos in the centre.

Grand Baie serves as one of the centers for cruises, the most popular of which is the so-called 3 Islands Tour.

The following companies, for example, are based in the city:

We describe what the prices are, where the cruises go and other embarkation points in the What to do in Mauritius chapter.

Our accommodation tips

Grand Baie is a popular town for backpackers who want to explore Mauritius on their own. You'll find plenty of cheap guesthouses and hotels, as well as good access to public transport.

We recommend these accommodations:

  • Residence Peramal - simply furnished apartments with stunning views of the lagoon and great prices from 60 usd, located in a quiet area about 15 minutes walk from the centre
  • Azure Beach Boutique Hotel **** - well rated hotel right in the city centre

How to get there

Free parking is available anywhere along the street where there is no yellow line painted.

There are also parking lots near the main public beach, but they tend to be full. However, most accommodations have their own parking spaces.

The following bus routes pass through Grand Baie:

  • direction Mon Choisy, Trou-aux-Biches - lines 20C, 82, 95, 228 (frequency 3-10 minutes)
  • direction Pereybere, Bain Boeuf, Cap Malheureux - lines 20C, 82, 95, 228 (frequency 5-10 minutes)
  • direction Port Louis - lines 20C, 82 (frequency 15-20 minutes) + express line 215 (every 30 minutes)
  • direction Pamplemousses (SSR Botanical Garden) - line 95 (frequency 20-35 minutes)

Detailed information on tickets and timetables can be found in the Transport chapter.
