Where to stay in Mauritius

Mauritius

Accommodation will be the most expensive item in your budget when travelling to Mauritius if you stay in a hotel. However, there are several private apartments operating here where prices are at affordable levels.

Which places are the cheapest to stay in? And where are the best? Read on in this chapter.

Where to stay in Mauritius

Mauritius is divided into several regions where you should choose your accommodation.

West Coast

This is the part of Mauritius I enjoyed the most I would definitely choose accommodation here if I were looking for a combination of a beach holiday and exploring the natural beauty.

Here you will find the famous resorts of Flic en Flac, Tamarin and Le Morne Beach, the iconic views of the Le Morne Brabant and Black River Gorges.

If you're looking for budget accommodation, focus on the village of La Gaulette near Le Morne. This is where you will find the largest concentration of cheap private apartments.

North Coast

The north of Mauritius is a popular area especially for beach holidays. The north coast is flat with several famous resorts and endless beaches.

East Coast

You'll also find a few resorts on the east coast, but more scattered luxury resorts along the length of the coast.

This part is therefore ideal for an uninterrupted beach holiday behind resort walls.

If you want a more active holiday with boat trips, focus on the area between Mahébourg and Trou d'Eau Douce, where cruises leave from, for example, Ile aux Cerfs.

On the east coast, we don't recommend specific resorts, but direct resorts:

The town of Trou d'Eau Douce in particular is one of the popular backpacker hubs of eastern Mauritius with a large number of cheap apartments.

South Coast

In the south, the most popular hotels are concentrated around the Blue Bay Marine Park, with its abundant underwater life and beautiful beaches.

We'd recommend these hotels here:

Further south you'll find more individual resorts outside the big resorts.

I stayed at SO Sofitel Mauritius *****. I describe how to miss an opportunity for a great hotel with a great location in my review of the stay.

Chamarel

The mountain village of Chamarel is famous mainly for the natural formation of the Seven Coloured Lands and a great place for luxury getaways in the countryside.

In fact, you will find some quite expensive but absolutely fabulous hotels here. But there are also cheap apartments in the centre of Chamarel village.

Port Louis

The capital city of Port Louis is not a typical tourist destination, but it is an ideal place to spend the night during a road-trip around the island, for example.

Hotel prices - when are they cheapest?

Accommodation is often the most expensive item when travelling to Mauritius.

Regular 3* hotels near the beach cost around 145 usd per night, but 4* and 5* resorts average out at 200 usd to 400 usd per night.

If you want to enjoy a luxury holiday in Mauritius, it usually works out cheaper to buy a holiday package with a travel agent.

Holidays to Mauritius with a travel agent

If you don't dare to plan a holiday on your own, there is of course the option of using a travel agency.

Holidays to Mauritius are mainly offered by European tour operators mainly from Germany, the UK, the Czech Republic or Poland.
