Weather in Mauritius and best time to go

Mauritius enjoys year-round warm weather. It lies near the Tropic of Capricorn south of the equator and therefore has a tropical climate.
However, due to its location in the Indian Ocean, the tropics are more bearable than on the mainland and even in the hot season, being outdoors is quite pleasant.
The island officially has only 2 seasons - a humid hot summer (November-April) and a dry cooler winter (May-October).

Specifics of the weather in Mauritius
However, Mauritius is characterised by three seasons.
- From January to April, it rains very often due to cyclones - usually 1-2 cyclones per year, which affect the weather for about 3-4 days.
- During the winter , from late June to August, there are often strong winds, but especially in the east and southeast - at this time, anticyclones can occur, when it can rain again for up to 3 days in a row, but the rest of the time it rains only minimally.
- From September to December the climate is ideal with higher temperatures but little rainfall.
Weather and temperatures during the year
This is what the weather in Mauritius looks like during the different months of the year.
Weather in January
January is the hottest and wettest month of the year.
Average temperatures hover around 28 °C and heavy showers are frequent. Despite this, January is one of the sunniest months as showers rarely last more than half a day.
The high humidity makes being outdoors less pleasant, but January is ideal for beach holidays with short trips.
Weather in February
February is the rainiest month of the year with the best chance of tropical cyclones, when it can rain for 3-4 days straight.
Still, this general rule shouldn't deter you from travelling. Most of the month is partly cloudy with temperatures around 28°C and only occasional showers.
Weather in March
During March, rainfall is roughly halved compared to February, but it tends to be more cloudy, especially on the east and south coasts.
Normal temperatures hover around 27°C, making March a good time for beach holidays interspersed with short trips or road-trips.

Weather in April
April marks the end of the tropical cyclone season, but showers still occur relatively frequently, averaging 7 days a month. However, it usually only rains for a few hours at a time at most.
Generally, April is a sunny to partly cloudy month, with normal temperatures around 27°C.
Weather in May
May is a great month to visit Mauritius. Temperatures are pleasant at around 26°C, rainfall is less than in winter and there are often completely clear skies.
This is why May is considered one of the best times to combine beach holidays and active tourism.
Weather in June
June is the first month of winter when the dry season begins. There are often unpleasant cold winds on the eastern and southern coasts, but the rest of the island has mostly beautiful sunny weather.
Normal temperatures range between 22 and 26°C and June is one of the coolest months for hiking, for example in the Black River Gorges NP or on Le Morne Brabant mountain.
Weather in July
July is the coldest month of the year with normal temperatures between 19°C and 25°C.
However, there is very little rainfall and often clear or partly cloudy skies. Occasionally an anticyclone will occur in July, bringing 3 days of persistent rainfall, especially on the east and south coasts, but generally July is the rainiest month of the year.
Weather in August
August is also a cold winter month by Mauritian standards with temperatures between 19°C and 25°C.
There is very little rain except for occasional anticyclones that bring prolonged rainfall from the east and south. However, this is not the rule and rather you have the chance of beautiful semi-cloudy weather absolutely perfect for hiking and swimming.
In fact, the water is warm in the shallow lagoons even in these winter months.
Weather in September
September is a dry month with minimal rainfall and temperatures between 20°C and 26°C, and the humidity is very pleasant.
During September, thunderstorms or prolonged rain are very rare and the wind is not very strong.
This month is therefore a great choice for active hiking.

Weather in October
October is the driest month of the year with the least rainfall.
With great temperatures between 21°C and 27°C, we personally consider October the best month to travel to Mauritius.
The weather is warm enough for a beach holiday and pleasant enough for walking in the mountains, sights and markets.
Weather in November
November marks the beginning of the hot, humid summer. Temperatures routinely soar to 30°C and humidity and rainfall frequency increase.
However, it usually rains only 3 days a month on average, making November a great month to visit.
- Tip.
Weather in December
During December, the real rainy season begins, when rainfall increases significantly.
However, this doesn't mean that you'll miss your entire stay. Most of the time, the rain will only appear for a few hours in the morning or afternoon and on average only 6 days a month.
Temperatures soar to between 26 and 31°C and the humidity is high.

When to go to Mauritius
Mauritius is actually a year-round destination.
The weather can be nice at any time of the year, but it can also rain at any time.
Above we have described the general weather that normally prevails in each month, but recently the weather has been changing a lot, so not everything is 100% the rule.
The best time for a beach holiday
The hottest months, along with low rainfall, are October-December and May.
But you can swim in the sea all year round, only in winter (i.e. June to September) you have to take into account that the weather can be cooler in the mornings and evenings, even below 20°C.
Best time for hiking
Plan your visit for the drier months, i.e. May to November, when the humidity is not as high.
Alternative destinations in the Indian Ocean
Deciding between multiple destinations for a holiday in this part of the Indian Ocean?
- Reunion - the nearest island has the same seasons as Mauritius, but is even wetter due to its mountainous terrain
- Seychelles - the archipelago north of Mauritius has the opposite main beach season, from June to October
- Zanzibar - the main rain-free season runs from June to September and then in January and February
