The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden is a popular tourist attraction and a surprisingly large beautifully maintained park.

It is the oldest botanical garden in the southern hemisphere, founded in 1770. The garden covers an area of 37 hectares.

Set aside at least 1 hour to visit the SSR Botanical Gardens.

Within the gardens you will also see an old sugar cane mill or Mon Plaisir, the residence of the Labourdonnais family, who bought part of the garden in 1735.

The lake of lilies and the kingdom of flowers

The most popular part of the garden is the large water lily lake with small turtles, which is located roughly in the middle of the grounds.

Around the lake you will walk through many themed gardens with beautiful colourful flowers, but also trees and woody plants.

Overall, the garden is very nicely landscaped with easy to understand labels in English and French.

Turtles and deer

In addition to the flowers, trees and ponds, you will find enclosures with large turtles and deer that you can freely enter.

The deer are tame and not afraid of people, just like the turtles. These areas are particularly popular with children.

Entrance fees and opening hours

The SSR Botanical Garden is open every day from 8:30-17:30. The last entry is possible at 17:00.

The price of admission for foreign visitors is 300 mur.
