While planning a road-trip around Mauritius, I was interested in the maps about lava tunnels in the town of Roches Noires on the northeast coast.

The town is right on the main road, so it was a natural stop on the way from Bras d'Eau National Park to the resort of Grand Baie.

Although many maps indicate the main area of lava caves as being on the western edge of the Roches Noires (for example on this map), these lava tunnels are currently inaccessible to the public.

The only lava cave named as La Cave Madame can be found right in the centre just off the main road (exact location on the map).

Entrance to the cave is free and available 24/7. In real terms, you can only walk about 20 metres from the cave entrance and the whole visit will take about 3 minutes.

Honestly this was disappointing and for me it is only worth stopping here if you have a way around.
