The peninsula on which the majestic Le Morne Brabant mountain stands is one of the most beautiful beach destinations in Mauritius.

Over 3 km of fine white sand beach stretches along the entire western coast of the peninsula.

Top 10 luxury resorts in Mauritius

The entrance to the water is very gradual and safe. The waters around Le Morne Peninsula are shallow and absolutely ideal for easy snorkelling for beginners.

Are all the beaches public?

The coastline along Le Morne is occupied by many luxury hotel resorts, but there are large gaps between them with publicly accessible parts of the beach.

In fact, you can walk freely and for free on the hotel beaches, but you cannot use any services on them, not even sunbeds and umbrellas.

The public beaches in Le Morne are at the following locations:

  • at the monument to the abolition of slavery - map (1.5 km long beach)
  • on the south-western tip of the peninsula between the Riu and St. Regis hotels - map (spacious beach with nice views)

Access to the beaches is free 24/7.

Water sports and beach facilities

There are no sun lounger or umbrella rentals on the public beaches. Small stalls with local refreshments open from around 10:00 and free toilets are also available.

In both parts of the public beach you will find rental shops and schools for kitesurfing, which is extremely popular in this area.

Boats also leave from the Le Morne area for cruises along the coast, for whale watching and diving. For example, the following agencies operate here:

Le Morne Beach hosts the best resorts from all over Mauritius.

Despite the higher prices, I absolutely recommend staying in this part of the island if you want to experience the most iconic views and the best swimming.

Holiday Packages with Travel Agent

There are also many tour offers heading to the Le Morne area, especially from European tour operators.

Prices for Le Morne tours tend to be the highest of any in Mauritius, but the reward will be a holiday without compromise and to the highest standard.

Travel agents generally offer the same hotels you can book individually.

How to get there

A good wide road runs along the entire peninsula, taking you all the way south to the Riu Hotel.

There are large free car parks at all parts of the public beaches, where you can always find a free space.

If you're not staying at one of the resorts, we definitely recommend taking a rental car. Taxis are very expensive in Mauritius, and even if you only have to rent a car for a few days, it will probably work out cheaper than travelling by taxi.

We describe how to get around Mauritius on your own in the Transport chapter.

There is no public transport to the beaches and resorts in Le Morne, and the nearest stop is over 3km away at the junction with the main ring road along the island.
