Monolithos Castle

In the beautiful hilly landscape of the southwestern tip of the island, besides small beaches among the cliffs, visit the former Venetian fortress - Monolithos Castle.
Built in 1476 on a rock promontory nearly 300 metres above the sea, the fortress still looks monumental, even though only the outer walls and a small new chapel built in the 20th century remain.
It also provides breathtaking views of the island's dramatic west coast and the Aegean Sea.
Admission and a visit to the castle
Monolithos Castle is freely accessible 24/7 and admission is free.
The castle itself isn't large and will take less than 15 minutes to visit, but if you're renting a car in Rhodes, it's definitely worth a visit - the views are breathtaking and the whole wooded western part of the island has a beautiful atmosphere.
You can enter the entire ruins and the chapel inside the castle is free to enter.
We recommend combining a trip to Monolithos Castle with a visit to nearby Fourni Beach, which we rate as the most beautiful beach on Rhodes.
How to get there
There is a beautiful pine forest walkway about 150 meters long leading to the castle from the road and the small free parking lot.
The turn-off from the main road is right in the village of Monolithos, about 2 km away.
There are no buses to the castle and there is a bus from Rhodes town to Monolithos village only once a week on Mondays.
