Weather in Rhodes and best time to go

Rhodes is considered one of the sunniest islands in the Mediterranean.
In the summer months, temperatures hover around 30°C, and the days between June and August are almost rainless. However, the local fauna is still surprisingly colourful and diverse in summer, especially in the interior. Rhodes has a typical subtropical climate.
Winters are also mild and pleasant and ideal for exploring the small villages in the hinterland.
Weather and temperatures throughout the year
Wondering whether it makes sense to explore Rhodes in the low season? Take a look at our weather summary of the island.
Weather in January
January is a rainy month with average temperatures around 15°C and constantly changing weather.
Prolonged rain is not very common, but short and very heavy showers can occur several times a day.
January is an ideal month to explore the historic towns and inland villages almost completely free of other tourists.
Weather in February
During February there are frequent but usually short showers accompanied by partly cloudy or clear weather.
With normal daytime temperatures of around 15°C, February is a good month to explore towns and villages with very few tourists.
Weather in March
Spring arrives in March with temperatures around 17 °C and showers decreasing significantly.
It rains only a few days a month and generally the weather is mostly clear and partly cloudy.
Most of the beach services don't work as the sea is still very cold, but if you want to discover Rhodes without tourists and enjoy pleasant weather for trekking with only a minimal chance of rain, March is a great month to visit.
Just be aware that during March, Rhodes is practically only served by domestic flights within Greece and you have to change planes in Athens when travelling from Europe.

Weather in May
During May, the summer season slowly gets underway and most charter and low-cost flights from many parts of Europe are already in operation.

Rain is rare in May.
Weather in June
June is the first purely summer month in Rhodes, with temperatures rising to an average of 27 °C to 30 °C.

During June, rain is an exceptional occurrence.
Weather in July
July is the peak season with temperatures between 29°C and 33°C and constant sunshine.
It doesn't rain at all in July, which results in an increased risk of fires, so please take care not to throw cigarettes into the open air.
Weather in August
August is the warmest month of the year with average temperatures of 29°C to 34°C and no rain.
The landscape is dry and very prone to fires and prices for all services are the highest of the year, as it is in August that the largest crowds of tourists from Europe head to Rhodes.
Weather in September
September is a great month for summer holidays in Rhodes.
Temperatures hover around 28°C and the sea is still beautifully warm at 27°C. Although September is still the main peak season, there are still slightly fewer tourists than in July and August.
Accommodation prices are slightly lower, as are holiday deals from tour operators.
Weather in October
Also during October you can easily go on a summer holiday in Rhodes.
Air temperatures hover around 25°C during the day and the sea water is a pleasant 24°C.
Although October is the first month of autumn, rain showers usually start to appear towards the end of the month in the form of very brief and light precipitation.
Last-minute holiday deals tend to be very cheap in October.
Weather in November
November is the first off-season month. Rhodes can only be reached via Athens or Thessaloniki with Aegean Airlines or Sky Express, as all direct low-cost and charter flights from Europe only fly until the end of October.
November temperatures drop to 20°C and there are more showers, but partly cloudy or completely clear skies are more common.
Few tourists head to Rhodes in this month, but hotels in the larger towns are open, making it an ideal opportunity to experience the island in its authentic form.
The weather in December
December is the rainiest month on Rhodes.
While there can be a few days of rain, short, heavy showers are more common, filling up the otherwise dry riverbeds for the rest of the year.
Temperatures oscillate between 16 °C and 18 °C.
Sea temperature
Sea temperature fluctuates throughout the year, ranging between 15-20 °C in winter and around 24-28 °C in summer. The sea is particularly warm in the shallow bays of the eastern part of the island.
The north-west and west of the island is much windier throughout the year, so most of the main tourist resorts are located in the eastern half of the island.

Summer holidays
For sea, heat and beach holidays, Rhodes is mainly visited from June to September, with the main peak season with the highest prices in July, August and the first half of September.

Exploring the island out of season
But Rhodes also welcomes tourists in spring and autumn, when it's the ideal time to explore the sights, take nature hikes and sunbathe on empty beaches.
Hotel and car rental prices during these periods are very reasonable and up to 60% lower than during the holidays. Spring and autumn is also the ideal time if you want to experience authentic Greek island life in nice but not hot weather.
Be warned, however, that from late October to early April, Rhodes can only be reached by air via Athens or Thessaloniki and there are no direct flights from Europe during this period.
