Weather in January

January is a rainy month with an average temperature of around 15 °C and constantly changeable weather.

Prolonged rain is not very common here, but short, very heavy showers can occur several times a day.

January is the ideal month for exploring historic towns and inland villages with virtually no other tourists around.

Weather in February

During February, there are frequent but usually short showers accompanied by partly cloudy or clear skies.

Typical daytime temperatures hover around 15 °C, making February a good month for exploring towns and villages where there will be very few tourists.

Weather in March

Spring arrives in March with temperatures around 17 °C, and showers become significantly less frequent.

It rains on only a few days of the month, and the weather is generally mostly clear or partly cloudy.

Most beach facilities are closed as the sea is still very cold, but if you want to explore Rhodes without the crowds and enjoy pleasant weather for hiking with only a minimal chance of rain, March is a great month to visit.

Just bear in mind that during March, virtually the only flights to Rhodes are domestic flights within Greece, and if you’re travelling from Europe, you’ll need to change flights at Athens Airport (ATH).

Weather in April

April offers very pleasant weather, with temperatures ranging between 18 °C and 22 °C, making it ideal for sightseeing and exploring the island’s natural beauty.

There are rain showers on about 4 days a month, and the weather is mostly clear.

The first seasonal flights to Rhodes begin in April, particularly with Ryanair.

However, many beach facilities are still not operational during April and the sea temperature is only around 18 °C.

Weather in May

The summer season gets slowly underway in May, and most charter and low-cost flights from many parts of Europe are already operating.

Daytime temperatures rise to an average of 24 °C and all tourist facilities are now open.

Rain is extremely rare in May.

Weather in June

June is the first fully summer month in Rhodes, when temperatures rise to an average of 27 °C to 30 °C.

All hotels and services are in operation, and all tourist attractions are open. This is also the time of year when many tour operators offer great last-minute holiday deals.

Rain is an extremely rare occurrence during June.

Weather in July

July is the peak season, with temperatures ranging between 29 °C and 33 °C and constant sunshine.

It never rains in July, which results in an increased risk of wildfires, so please take great care not to throw cigarette ends into the countryside.

Weather in August

August is the hottest month of the year, with average temperatures of 29 °C to 34 °C and no rain.

The landscape is dry and highly prone to fires, and prices for all services are at their highest for the year, as August is when the largest crowds of tourists from Europe flock to Rhodes.

Weather in September

September is a great month for a summer holiday in Rhodes.

Temperatures hover around 28 °C and the sea is still a lovely 27 °C. Although September is still peak season, there are slightly fewer tourists here than in July and August.

Accommodation prices are slightly lower, as are holiday deals from travel agencies.

Weather in October

You can also head off on a summer holiday to Rhodes in October without any worries.

Daytime air temperatures hover around 25 °C and the sea is a pleasant 24 °C.

Although October is the first month of autumn, rain showers usually only start to appear towards the end of the month in the form of very brief and light showers.

There are often very cheap last-minute holiday deals in October.

Weather in November

November is the first off-season month. You can only get to Rhodes via Athens or Thessaloniki with Aegean Airlines or Sky Express, as all direct low-cost and charter flights from Europe only operate until the end of October.

Temperatures in November drop to 20 °C and there are more showers, although partly cloudy or completely clear skies are more common.

Very few tourists visit Rhodes this month, but hotels in the larger towns remain open, making it the ideal opportunity to experience the island in its authentic form.

Weather in December

December is the rainiest month in Rhodes.

Although there may be spells of rain lasting several days, short, heavy showers are more common, filling the riverbeds that are otherwise dry for the rest of the year.

Temperatures range between 16 °C and 18 °C.

Sea temperature

The sea temperaturevaries throughout the year, ranging from 15–20 °C in the winter months and around 24–28 °C in the summer. You’ll find particularly warm sea water mainly in the shallow bays of the eastern part of the island.

The north-western and western parts of the island are significantly windier all year round, which is why most of the main tourist resorts are located in the eastern half.

When to go to Rhodes

Plan your trip to Rhodes according to why you’re heading to this Greek island.

Summer holidays

People mainly visit Rhodesfrom June to September for the sea, the heat and a beach holiday, with the peak season – when prices are at their highest – falling in July, August and the first half of September.

If you want to save money and enjoy the seaside resorts with significantly fewer tourists, head to Rhodes in the second half of May or the first half of October, when temperatures are a pleasant 24 °C and the sea is warm enough for swimming.

Exploring the island in the off-season

Rhodes also welcomes tourists in spring and autumn, which are ideal times for sightseeing, nature walks and sunbathing on quiet beaches.

Hotel and car hire prices are very reasonable during these periods, up to 60% lower than during the summer holidays. Spring and autumn are also the ideal times if you want to experience authentic life on the Greek islands in pleasant, but not hot, weather.

Please note, however, that from late October to early April, Rhodes can only be reached by air via Athens or Thessaloniki, and there are no direct flights from Europe during this period.

You’ll usually find the widest range of flights to Rhodes via Athens in winter on the aegeanair.com website.
