Where to stay in Ko Samui
Where to stay on Koh Samui? Choosing a hotel here isn't just about price or photos of the beach - location matters more than the hotel itself.
I take a lot of care in choosing hotels before every trip (dozens of open tabs, location comparisons, maps, reviews, availability), and that goes double for Samui. The differences between different parts of the island are huge.
This is a selection based on:
- hotels we've stayed in
- hotels we've actually considered
- and a long-term observation of what works on Samui.
Make a quick decision
For a quick initial orientation, we'd recommend the following locations.
Exactly as we planned them.
- Nightlife, shops, markets, great beach (quiet around the edges even at night) β Chaweng
- Modern resort, nice beach, nightlife and quiet, night markets β Bophut
- Compromise (good accessibility, shops, markets, but otherwise rather quiet) β Lamai
- Quiet + resort β Choeng Mon
- Total tranquility β Mae Nam / North / most luxurious resorts anywhere
- Avoid β west and south coast (not very nice sea or surroundings)
My recommendation (this is what I would do)
If I were going to Koh Samui for the first time:
- I would choose Chaweng, but not the full centre, ideally something like Homm Chura Samui (see our experience in this review)
If I wanted a quieter, nicer hotel stay:
- β‘οΈ I would go to the north of the island
- β‘οΈ and tackle the hotel as the main experience
- β‘οΈ W Koh Samui fulfils exactly that - detailed review here
This is, in my opinion, the most important decision on all of Samui:
- either you seek accommodation as a "practical base"
- or as a "resort for relaxation"
Best locations and tips for hotels
These are the best places to stay on Koh Samui in our opinion.
Chaweng - the best base
The most vibrant town on the island with a full range of services including a modern shopping centre.
- Best accessibility (Grab, taxi)
- Most restaurants and services
- beautiful beach with great sand
- best discos and beach nightclubs
- but at the same time quiet and peaceful on the outskirts for families with children
β Reality:
- the centre is noisy β it pays to be slightly out of the way
My experience: Homm Chura Samui
β‘οΈ Here is our detailed review of our stay.
Why we chose it:
- We wanted Chaweng, but not the chaos
- good price/quality ratio
- Reasonable location (you can walk to the hotel but you won't be disturbed by noise)
- but bad sea (lots of seaweed)
Exactly the type of hotel that makes the most sense on Samui.
Other hotels I've realistically considered:
- SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort - π luxury
β one of the best hotels on the beach - OZO Chaweng Samui - β mid-range
β comfort, good facilities, good prices, downtown Chaweng - First Bungalow Beach Resort - π° budget / vibe
β the cheapest hotel with basic but clean bungalows in a quiet southern part of the beach
Bophut / Fisherman's Village - best evening vibe
My favourite part of the island and a great beach. Modern pedestrian promenade, nice cafes but also lively in the evening at the local pedestrian shopping area, Coco Tam's club or night markets.
- Restaurants, bars, night market
- quieter than Chaweng
- good for couples and families
Hotels I considered:
- Anantara Bophut - π luxury
β luxury without compromise right on the beach - Holiday Inn Resort Bophut - β mid-range
β top value for money, ideal for families, right in the middle of Bophut - ibis Samui Bophut - π° budget option
β cheap classic in the quieter western part of the beach
North (Mae Nam, Bang Pho) - tranquillity and resorts
Peace and quiet yet along the main road so good accessibility, a few restaurants and of course a few 7-Elevens.
- Minimum of people
- Quiet
- strong resorts
My experience.
β‘οΈ Here is our detailed review of our stay.
This is not "just a hotel":
- Views
- Privacy
- luxury and comfort
Exactly the type of place you go for a hotel.
Other hotels I've come across:
- Four Seasons Koh Samui - π top luxury
β an absolute icon and one of the most famous hotels in all of Thailand - Khwan Beach Resort - β boutique mid-range
β highly rated modern hotel with bungalows - Coco Palm Beach Resort - π° budget option
β the cheapest budget local resort in the quieter part of Mae Nam Beach
Lamai - best value for everything
Honestly one of the best locations on the island if you prefer a compromise between quiet and lively resort, good accessibility and convenience.
- Less chaos than Chaweng
- still plenty of restaurants
- better for a longer stay
- good for trips inland
If I were going a second time, I would very seriously consider Lamai.
Hotels that make sense:
- Silavadee - π luxury
β great top luxury, cheaper than neighbouring Banyan Tree - OUTRIGGER Koh Samui - β mid-range
β relaxed and very popular resort with good value for money - Utopia Resort - π° budget option
β very cheap local resort on the northern edge of the beach near the town centre
Choeng Mon - quiet + nice beaches
The best compromise for a quieter holiday.
- close to the airport
- nicer beaches
- fewer people
Ideal if:
- you don't want chaos
- but you don't want to be cut off
- you want to choose between luxury but also very cheap resorts right on the beach
Choice of hotels:
- Cape Fahn Hotel - π top luxury
β famous hotel on a private island with its own ferry included in the price - Garrya Tongsai Bay - β mid-range
β absolute tranquility with its own private beach (one of the best on the whole island) - Kirati Beach Resort - π° budget option
β very cheap local resort right on Choengmon Beach
Luxury hotels on Koh Samui (honeymoon, special occasions)
If you're tackling a honeymoon, anniversary or simply a "once in a lifetime" getaway, Koh Samui is perfect for it.
Here, you're no longer just choosing a location - the hotel is the experience itself.
This is exactly the kind of situation and location where it's worth paying extra.
Luxury hotels on Koh Samui may not be cheap, but you'll still pay a little less here than in top premium locations like the Maldives or Seychelles.
π My top choice: W Koh Samui
I chose this hotel for its good accessibility, relaxed vibe and relatively decent price compared to other top hotels on Koh Samui.
I describe my feelings and experience in detail, including dozens of my own photos of the rooms, beach, breakfast or bars here:
Other luxury hotels I seriously considered
These are other hotels that I had open when planning:
- Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui - π top of the top
β extreme privacy, jungle + views, famous from the White Lotus series
β beautiful sunsets from some villas - Banyan Tree Samui - π villa resort
β beautiful hillside villas, views
β best sunrises on Koh Samui - Six Senses Samui - π eco luxury
β very specific vibe, tranquility
β modern resort in the north, sunsets from some villas, sunrises from others - SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort - π luxury in Chaweng
β good price/experience compromise
β best hotel in Chaweng - InterContinental Koh Samui Resort - π more affordable luxury
β a bit old-school in the remote southern part of the island
β best sunsets
β often very reasonable prices and great value for money
The best budget hotels on Koh Samui
It's very cheap to stay on Koh Samui. But this is where most mistakes are made.
The difference between a "good budget hotel" and a "bummer" is often only a few hundred crowns.
Below I add tips for hotels that make sense.
What does "budget hotel" mean in Samui?
- π° 1 000 thb to 1 200 thb / night / room
π You can already find one at this price:
- air conditioning
- swimming pool
- good location
- private bathroom and toilet in the room
Hotels that make sense (my choice)
These are the types of hotels that I realistically had open when planning or match what I would choose:
- Lub d Koh Samui Chaweng -π° budget / vibe
β great location, modern, ideal if you want to be near the action - ibis Samui Bophut -π° cheap and security of a well-known brand
β clean, quieter location, good standard for the price - Montien House (Chaweng) -π° good location
β simple but right by the beach - Kirati Beach Resort -π° value for money
β very cheap local hotel right on Choengmon Beach
Biggest mistakes when choosing a hotel
1οΈβ£ Choosing just by the beach
The beach may be beautiful, but the surroundings are not so great (the main problem of the western part of the island).
2οΈβ£ Ignoring the location
Save 20 eur/night β lose hours of time (again, mainly the west of the island where there is almost nothing).
3οΈβ£ Not dealing with traffic
No scooter/car = only choose hotels near the main ring road.
4οΈβ£ Too cheap hotels
It's often not worth it on Samui. Read other guests' reviews.
How much do hotels on Koh Samui cost
| Category | Price / night / room |
|---|---|
| π° Budget | From 1 100 thb |
| β Mid-range | 2 500 thb - 5 000 thb |
| π Luxury | from 7 500 thb |
When are the most expensive hotels on Koh Samui?
Prices fluctuate a lot depending on the season.
Expect the absolute highest prices (up to 40% higher than outside these periods):
- Christmas
- New Year
- July and August
Conversely, the cheapest hotels are in the rainy season from October to December.
Find out the current hotel prices for hotels in the rainy season
My final advice
On Koh Samui, the following applies:
- Location is more important than the hotel brand
- the west of the island is not very nice
Which is exactly why it makes sense to combine two different hotels as we did on our last stay:
- Homm Chura Samui - as a practical base in Chaweng
- W Koh Samui - as an experience in the north
