We went to Gardens by the Bay for the first time thinking it was a "must-see, check it off and move on". In the end, I think it's one of the most interesting attractions in the world.

We enjoyed it during the day - the open space, the views of the Marina Bay Sands, the pleasant walk through the "trees". It's not just a quick stop for a photo, as they sometimes say.

But the moment when it all takes on an absolutely different dimension comes in the evening.

The light show between the Supertrees is really powerful. Yes, there are a lot of people (sometimes a lot), but it's still worth it.

👉 If you have time, go twice - in the day and in the evening.
👉 If not, come mainly for the night show.

What is Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay is a modern park created artificially on „reclaimed land“ by Marina Bay - the land that Singapore reclaimed from the sea.

The most famous parts are the so-called Supertrees - giant steel structures 25 to 50 metres high that:

  • act as vertical gardens (with real plants growing on them)
  • collect rainwater
  • and partially generate energy (e.g. for park lighting)

In other words: they are not just "decoration" but a combination of design, ecology and technology.

The whole project was conceived as part of an effort to make Singapore a "city in a garden" - that is, to combine modern architecture with greenery.

Is Gardens by the Bay worth a visit?

A visit to the entire area, including the greenhouses, will take 2-4 hours.

Yes, if:

  • you are visiting Singapore for the first time and want to see the iconic sites
  • You are planning an evening program in the Marina Bay area
  • you want a simple but visually powerful stop
  • you don't mind the crowds at the evening show

❌ Not really if:

  • you're looking for a quiet, authentic place with no tourists
  • you're expecting a classic botanical garden

💡 Alternative:
Singapore Botanic Gardens - quieter, free and more "natural".

What to see at Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay is not one attraction, but several parts that make sense to see separately.

Supertree Grove (the main part of the park)

  • Iconic "trees" up to 50 m high
  • the main area of the whole complex

During the day, it's a pleasant walk that gets you out of the hustle and bustle of the city. But don't expect a "wow effect" at first sight.

That comes in the evening when the trees are beautifully lit.

And most importantly, there's a monumental light show. More on that below.

The 10 best hotels in Singapore

OCBC Skyway vs. supreme Supertree vs. view from the ground

  • OCBC Skyway = yellow toll bridge through the trees
  • View from the highest 50m Supertree = pay terrace
  • From the ground = free

We've been everywhere and honestly: there's no point in going to both the Supertree and the OCBC Skyway.

  • Views and photos → Supertree
  • atmosphere and show → stay down
  • OCBC Skyway → I would personally skip

Greenhouses (Cloud Forest and Flower Dome)

Both domes are pay-per-view and operate as separate attractions.

Marina Barrage (best quiet bonus)

  • Grassy rooftop overlooking the skyline
  • minimum tourists
  • perfect for sunset

After visiting the Gardens, it's a great contrast - peace and space.

Park

A large part of the area is taken up by a beautifully landscaped park with walking trails, ponds and benches.

Evening show Supertrees (Garden Rhapsody)

This is a moment that makes it worth planning a visit for the evening.

Every day, the Garden Rhapsody light and music show takes place among the Supertrees. The trees gradually light up, change colors, and the whole thing works much better than you'd expect from the photos alone.

Personally, I was expecting more of a "tourist attraction". In the end, it was one of the best moments of the evening in Singapore.

👉 Yes, there are a lot of people. Sometimes really a lot.
But it's still worth it.

When's the light show?

  • Every day
  • always twice - 7:45 and 8:45 p.m.
  • each show lasts 15 minutes
  • for a list of current music tracks, visit the official website gardensbythebay.com.sg

Where to stand

  • the best place is right under the trees
  • ideally sit or lie down and look up

That's where the show has its greatest effect.

When to come

  • ideally 20-30 minutes before the show starts
  • the second show is sometimes a little less full

👉 Arriving at the last minute = standing at the back with no view.

Does Skyway make sense during the show?

Not for us.

  • Limited capacity
  • different point of view
  • weaker atmosphere than from the ground

👉 The best experience is down in the trees.

Admission and opening hours

  • Admission to the gardens and Supertrees - free
  • OCBC Skyway - 14 sgd
  • View from the highest Supertree - 14 sgd

👉 The main experience (evening light show) is free.

When is Gardens by the Bay open?

  • Gardens and Supertree Grove - 5:00 to 2:00
  • OCBC Skyway and Supertree Observatory - 9:00am to 9:00pm

How to get there

Gardens by the Bay is easily accessible by metro or on foot from Marina Bay.

  • MRT Bayfront (yellow and blue lines) → via Marina Bay Sands → approx. 10-15 minutes on foot
  • MRT Gardens by the Bay (brown line) → closer to the entrance

The 👉 Bayfront is easier for a first visit.

We describe our experience and ticket prices in our article Metro in Singapore.

Practical info

The gardens are large and there are several food courts as well as many free toilets.

From the main entrance, which is on the south (on the opposite side to the Marina Bay Sands hotel), you can also pay for an electric trolley tour for 10 sgd. There are also lockers at the entrance for luggage storage.

How to combine two light shows?

Singapore is famous for two light shows:

  • Gardens by the Bay - Garden Rhapsody (Supertrees)
  • Marina Bay Sands - Spectra Light & Water Show

And they can be beautifully combined in one evening.

Option 1 - recommended (best flow)

👉 S pectra first → then Supertrees

  1. Spectra at Marina Bay Sands (20:00 / 21:00), takes 15 minutes
  2. walk to Gardens by the Bay (15-20 minutes)
  3. Garden Rhapsody (20:45)

👉 This works best because:

  • You watch the Spectra "from the front" (better view)
  • then you go smoothly into the Gardens, you have time to move
  • and you end up with a more powerful experience (Supertrees)

Option 2 - the other way around (less ideal)

  1. Supertrees (19:45), takes 15 minutes
  2. Slow movement with a stop for a quick snack, for example
  3. Spectra (21:00)

Most common mistakes

1️⃣ You only come during the day
It's a completely different place in the evening. And I think it's better than daytime.

2️⃣ You leave the show to chance
Without a seat in advance, you'll see almost nothing.

3️⃣ You buy your ticket to OCBC Skyway automatically
It's not necessary. I would choose either OCBC or Supertree Observatory.

4️⃣ You skip Marina Barrage
Yet it's one of the most enjoyable spots in the area.

Hotels in the area

If you want gardens nearby, stay in the Marina Bay location, which is also one of the best bases for exploring the city.
