We went to Marina Barrage more by chance after visiting Gardens by the Bay. And it ended up being one of the most enjoyable moments of the whole day.

No queues, no program, no "attractions".

Just a large grassy area on the roof of the barrage, from where you can see the entire Marina Bay skyline - including Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay.

People are sitting on the grass, flying kites, eating and waiting for the sun to set. The atmosphere is completely different from a few hundred metres away.

The 10 best hotels in Singapore

Is Marina Barrage worth a visit?

Yes, if:

  • you want a quiet place with a view of the skyline
  • you're looking for the perfect sunset spot
  • you want to relax after Gardens by the Bay
  • you like picnics or a "slow travel" atmosphere

❌ Not likely if:

  • you are expecting a classic attraction or a "must-see" sight
  • you have minimal time
  • a programme or organised experience is important to you

💡 Alternative:
👉 stay at Gardens by the Bay for an evening show at Supertrees (a more "action-packed" experience)

What to expect at Marina Barrage

Marina Barrage is actually a dam that serves as a water storage and flood protection. However, it is mainly the roof that is of interest to visitors.

The rooftop grassy area

  • a large open meadow
  • view of the whole Marina Bay

People sitting, lying, flying kites or just watching the sunset. It's more like a local park than a tourist attraction.

View of the skyline

  • Marina Bay Sands
  • Gardens by the Bay
  • Panorama of downtown Singapore

👉 One of the best spots for photos - especially at sunset.

Indoor exposure (optional)

  • Smaller exhibition on water management
  • air-conditioned space

👉 Rather an extra attraction, most people stay upstairs.

When to come here

👉 Best time:

  • About 1-2 hours before sunset
  • stay after dark

Gradually the light changes, the city lights up and the atmosphere gets better and better.

How to include it in your itinerary

Best combination:

  1. Gardens by the Bay in the afternoon
  2. Transfer to Marina Barrage for sunset
  3. Supertrees evening show

How to get there

  • walk from Gardens by the Bay about 15-20 minutes
  • or a short taxi ride / Grab

👉 Walking makes the most sense.

But Gardens by the Bay is close to the metro station where the brown MRT line stops.

Most common mistakes

1️⃣ You miss it completely
Yet it's one of the nicest spots in the area.

2️⃣ You're too late
The sunset is the main reason to come here.

3️⃣ You're expecting an "attraction"
This is more of a stopping place than an activity.
