Prasonisi

Prasonisi

Prasonisi is a beautiful piece of nature, located in thesouthernmost part of the island. As inRhodes Town, the Aegean and Mediterranean seas meet here, differing in their colour and the intensity with which they touch the shores of the island.

The Prasonisi peninsula is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of sandy beach, at the end of which is a lighthouse with a view, which can be reached on foot (the road is about 2 km long in one direction).

The place is especially popular among surfers and water sports enthusiasts. There are several sports equipment rental shops and restaurants, as well as a deckchair rental shop.

Beaches and swimming

An interesting beach, or rather a narrow sandy strip, connects the mainland with the islet at low tide.

At high tide the beach often floods and the island becomes an island again. Tide times vary throughout the year, but in general you should always enjoy the beach unflooded for at least half a day.

In addition, there will usually be a strip of sand on the mainland that will not flood at high tide. You can find the tide forecast for Prasonisi on surf-cast.com, for example.

The beach is about 1 km long and is ideal for those looking for beautiful natural scenery away from the resorts.

At the edge of the beach a couple of tavernas, a bar, a supermarket and a few sports equipment rentals. Some of them also rent umbrellas and sunbeds with prices around 20 eur for a set of two sunbeds and an umbrella per day.

Water sports

Prasonisi is a paradise for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts. Renting a windsurf costs around 50 eur for an hour, 120 eur for a day or around 350 eur for a week.

  • West side (Aegean Sea) - bigger waves, great for kitesurfing
  • East side (Mediterranean) - smaller waves, great for swimming and windsurfing

You can use several windsurfing and kitesurfing centres, for example:

Walk to the lighthouse viewpoint

Prasonisi is certainly not just swimming and water sports.

Take a short trek along the arid peninsula to the end, where you'll come across an old lighthouse and a former watchtower active during World War II.

The comfortable trek is about 5 km round trip in total.

Don't forget to take plenty of water. There is no refreshment option during the walk and also no shade.

Apart from the hikers, you will meet a lot of goats along the way!

Accommodation by the beach

Right in the small village by the beach you will find several hotels and apartments, all of which have great reviews.

Stay at Prasonisi if you're heading here for water sports and want to spend a few days or even 1 night during a road-trip around the island.

The evening atmosphere on Prasonisi is very specific. When the beach empties out, only windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts stay here, and with the nearest major town over 40 km away, the conditions are ideal for watching the night sky.

How to get to Prasonisi

Prasonisi is located over 90km from Rhodes Town and 30km from the nearest resort of Gennadi.

By car

The most comfortable way to get there is definitely by rental car. A well-maintained and well-marked asphalt road leads directly to the beach.
