The view of the white town of Lindos with its acropolis is one of the most typical images you can bring back from Rhodes.

The white houses on the rock, surmounted by a monumental stone castle, is also surrounded on both sides by beautiful beaches and a heart-shaped bay.

The place is a popular tourist destination, so you shouldn't be surprised by its prices and the large number of visitors strolling through the tight medieval streets. Lindos and its monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sights and attractions in Lindos

What to visit?

Acropolis of Lindos

Atop the hill above the town is a massive ancient acropolis complex dating back to the 4th century BC.

However, the entire acropolis is dominated by the 14th century AD Johannite fortress.

If you climb over this fortification, you will go back in time to ancient times, represented by the well-preserved temple of Athena of Lindos, but also to the Byzantine era with the Johannite church.

The terrain is quite challenging, with stone steps leading up to the gates of the acropolis from the centre in about 10 minutes. Some tourists take the opportunity to be taken to the acropolis on the back of a donkey, you can find their stations right in the city, but the prices are high (from 20 eur).

As the Acropolis of Lindos is the highest point in the whole area, there are beautiful views of the town, the beaches and the open sea.

Entrance fees and opening hours

The ticket price is 20 eur and is the same on site and when purchased online via the official website.

There are usually no queues at the ticket office and you can pay with cash or card.

In the summer, it is open daily 8:00-19:00.

Church of Our Lady (Panagia)

On the way from the acropolis, we also recommend visiting the main church, which is located roughly in the centre of the town and can be found by its projecting stone bell tower.

It is open daily 9:00-15:00 and is characterized by its impressive fresco decoration. Admission is at 8 eur.

Romantic streets with white houses

Apart from the acropolis, the main thing that makes Lindos so popular are the idyllic white houses set into the steep hillside.

The entire town of Lindos is completely car-free and you can only get around on foot within its centre.

You don't have to be intimidated by the large crowds on the main streets with shops and restaurants. Just turn into the side streets and you will find yourself in quiet corners completely free of tourists.

We recommend visiting Lindos in the early evening and after dark, when the narrow, softly lit streets have a magical atmosphere.

Lindos is a small town, so you can walk through the whole place in less than 15 minutes. At the same time, it is so charming that you can spend 2 hours here and still not get bored.

Ancient Theatre

On the southern slope of the hill with the acropolis towards St. Paul's Bay, you can admire the relatively well-preserved auditorium of the ancient theatre.

You can't walk directly among the ruins, but the entire Ancient Theatre area can easily be seen from the adjacent square 24/7 and is completely free of charge.

Our tip: dine in the rooftop restaurants

While most of the local restaurants are very touristy, the food is great just about everywhere and the higher price tag is definitely justified here.

In fact, most restaurants have rooftop terraces with magical views of the town's Acropolis landmark.

Prices for main meals here range from 13 eur to 20 eur and are comparable to those in Rhodes Town or major resorts like Faliraki or Koylmbia.

We visited the very good vegetarian restaurant T-Veg.

Lindos beaches

Directly in the town of Lindos below the acropolis you will find two beautiful mostly pebble beaches and a gradual entrance to the sea.

St. Paul's Bay

One of the most famous beaches in Rhodes is the one in St. Paul's Bay. It's a 15-minute walk from the town centre.

When viewed from the acropolis, the bay is heart-shaped. It is a very photogenic corner with a church and a restaurant, a very popular place for civil weddings.

St. Paul's Bay has small pebble beaches on both sides and is separated from the open sea by a stone cliff with a narrow passage. However, both beaches are very small and quite crowded from about 9:00 am.

The rugged rocky coastline is ideal for snorkelling and diving.

Lindos Beach

The main Lindos beach is located on the north side of the acropolis and unlike the beaches in St. Paul's Bay, it is spacious, wide and over 300 metres long.

There are several restaurants by the beach and of course sunbeds and umbrellas are available for a fee (20 eur per set per day).

Also Lindos Beach is mainly covered with pebbles mixed with coarse sand.

Letoviso Vlycha

About 4 km north of the historic centre is the small modern resort of Vlycha (sometimes spelled "Vlicha"), but formally it falls under Lindos.

Vlycha offers a wide pebble beach with a very gently shelving beach and a quiet environment and is one of the most popular resorts for families with children.

The most beautiful views of Lindos

The town with the Acropolis is very photogenic because it is situated in a hilly terrain and this also means that you will find several viewpoints in the surrounding area.

  • The view from the main road directly above Lindos (see location on map) - best in the afternoon, early evening and at night

  • The view from the main road between Lindos and Vlycha beach (see location on map) - in summer the town and the Acropolis are in slight sunlight all day and the conditions are therefore not ideal for photography

  • View from the southern parking lot by the main road (see location on map) - ideal especially in the afternoon and early evening, but during the summer conditions are quite good in the morning as well

Tourist services in Lindos

Lindos is one of the most touristy towns in Rhodes and therefore you will find full facilities here.

The main streets are literally lined with various shops selling fashion, beach equipment and especially souvenirs. However, the prices here are high.

Apart from the shops, you will find a huge number of restaurants and also various tourist agencies offering boat trips, snorkelling or diving.

Our opinion on crowded Lindos - is it worth a visit?

In a word: definitely!

Yes, Lindos may be the most touristy town on Rhodes, but there's a reason for that. The atmosphere of the narrow car-free streets with white houses, the monumental acropolis towering over the town and the beautiful bays is simply unrepeatable.

What's more, you only have to turn off the main pedestrian streets into the side streets to find yourself in an idyllic world without tourists.

Lindos is a town that I personally rate as one of the most beautiful in all of Europe!

Best Lindos Hotels

If you want to stay right in the town, be prepared for higher prices. A night in a double room goes from 100 eur to 180 eur in high season.

Also pay attention to the accommodation map, many offers under the name "Lindos" are also located 5-7 km from the old town along the beaches.

For easier orientation we select the best accommodation in Lindos:

  • Thalassa Luxury Studios - beautiful spacious studios above the Lindos beach directly below the Acropolis.
  • Lindos View Hotel **** - a classic hotel on the main road suitable for travellers with a rental car
  • Lindian Pearl - a well rated apartment right in the centre of Lindos, but in one of the quiet streets

Where did we stay during our Rhodes trip?

I stayed in Lindos for 2 nights, but as I was travelling by hire car, the key for me was accommodation outside the centre. I was travelling alone and for an extended period of time, so I also chose based on price. In the end, the choice fell on the well rated Lindos Athena Hotel *** located about 1,5 km from the town centre.

However, I was quite disappointed with the room, especially the cleanliness of the shower and the absolute lack of storage space.

Holidays with a travel agency - the best hotels

The town of Lindos is not one of the typical holiday resorts, but rather a destination for excursions from larger resorts.

Nevertheless, travel agencies also offer tours directly to Lindos, which is one of the quieter places with more luxurious 4* or 5* hotels.

Beware, however, that most of the hotels in Lindos are located quite far from the beach, or in the Vlycha area, which is over 4 km away from historic Lindos.

When planning a holiday to Lindos with a travel agent, we would choose from these top rated hotels. View the best weekly deals:

Transport and parking Lindos

Travel agencies often offer optional excursions to Lindos, the price always depends on whether you stop at other places with your guide and the price varies between 30 eur and 60 eur.

However, you can easily go to Lindos on your own.

By car

Lindos is right on the main ring road around the island and is very easy to reach by car.

All official car parks around the outskirts of the historic town and at the beaches of Lindos or St. Paul's Bay are charged at a 7 eur.

Payment is made physically at the attendant and is only possible in cash.

You will be given a ticket that is valid for the whole day, and with one parking ticket you can park freely in all the car parks around Lindos on any given calendar day.

For example, you can easily park for a few hours in the morning, then go to the beach and come back to Lindos in the evening. You won't have to pay for parking a second time in one day, as long as you still have your parking ticket from the morning.

There is plenty of parking around town and you can always find a free space.

Free parking

We've driven and walked cross-country around Lindos, but we haven't found safe and legal free parking.

Some drivers park on the unpaved shoulders along the main road, but these officially belong to various car rental companies or hotels, and if you park there illegally, you run the risk of having your car towed.

Public transport - buses

Lindos is also very accessible by the orange and white buses of KTEL Rodou.

The bus stop is on the main road about 650 metres from the historic centre.

To speed up the boarding process, we recommend buying your ticket in advance at the ticket office located at the southbound bus stop (Kiotari and Gennadi). In addition, you can also pay at this ticket office by card, whereas the ticket from the driver can only be paid with cash.

There is a free shuttle bus that runs between this stop and the central square between 9:00-17:00 with a frequency of 10-15 minutes, but you'll usually walk faster from the centre to the main road anyway.

Bus timetables can be found on the official KTEL Rodou website - ktelrodou.gr.

  • Rhodes Town - 1 to 2 times an hour, price 5,50 eur
  • Vlycha - only 6 times a day, even though Vlycha is officially part of Lindos, price 2 eur
  • Pefkos - 2 to 3 times per hour, price 2 eur
  • Kiotari - 2 to 3 times per hour, price 3 eur
  • Gennadi - 1 to 2 times per hour, price 3 eur
