What to do in Rhodes Town

Windmills

Rhodes may not be the main destination for most tourists heading to this popular Greek island, but it is clearly the biggest cultural and commercial centre.

Its remarkably well-preserved UNESCO-listed historic centre should certainly attract all travellers for at least a day trip from the beach resorts.

Soak up the atmosphere of a medieval town

The historic centre of Rhodes is one of the pearls of the whole of Greece, not just the island of Rhodes.

The streets of the Old Town are brimming with life, with an extreme number of touristy restaurants and shops, but at the same time, just turn down any side street and you will find yourself in a medieval realm of peace and quiet without the crowds of tourists.

You can walk through the Old Town in 30 minutes, but you can also come back again and again and spend hours here!

Walking along the sea or through the moat of the walls

Don't just stay hidden behind the walls of the Old Town, but walk right through the protective moat along the fortifications!

The ramparts themselves are not usually accessible, but there is an extremely interesting public trail that runs along the moat, accessible for free 24/7.

If you want to walk around the entire Old Town, be prepared for a 2.5 km walk - see the route map.

Popular walks along the seaside promenade also lead through Mandraki harbour and to the very photogenic windmills.

Beaches and swimming

The typical seaside resorts of the island are more likely to be Faliraki, Kolymbia or Ialyssos, but there are beaches in Rhodes town too. And great ones!

Even though all the local beaches are purely urban, they stand out for their cleanliness and very pleasant relaxed atmosphere.

There are 3 primary beaches in Rhodes town. All of them are described in detail on the following pages:

Cruises

On the promenade of Mandraki harbour you will find a huge number of stalls offering cruises of different lengths and to different destinations.

Cruises are available from virtually all the major resorts on Rhodes, but Rhodes Town has the largest selection.

The most popular cruises are:

  • Symi Island (full day cruise) - prices from 30 eur
  • Lindos with stops for snorkeling (most often at Anthony Quinn Beach) - prices from 35 eur
  • Evening cruises (2.5 hours) with refreshments - prices from 30 eur

You can compare cruises for example via getyourguide.com. However, it is usually possible to book a cruise for the same price directly at the port.
