Getting around Rhodes Town

Windmills

The town of Rhodes is small and can be easily and comfortably explored on foot.

There are two special city bus lines, but these are mainly for transport to residential areas and the hospital.

Apart from walking, tourists mostly use shared bicycles and scooters.

The 10 best hotels in Rhodes

On foot

The greatest distance between the harbour, or the eastern edge of the Old Town, and Akti Kanari beach is less than 2.5 km.

It follows, therefore, that Rhodes Town is perfectly fine to cross on foot.

In fact, walking is the fastest and most efficient way to get around. The streets are very narrow, cars are not even allowed to enter the Old Town, and public transport works well for getting around the island, but not only around the city.

Shared bikes and scooters

You'll find Mercury bikes or Hoppy scooters dotted around the city.

You can also use the bikes and scooters to travel out of town and return them at any point in the permitted area, which extends practically to the middle of Rhodes.

You need to have the mobile app downloaded to use it.

Prices are usually around 1,50 eur per unlock + approx 0,18 eur per minute or various discounted plans are available such as 8,50 eur per hour or 27,50 eur for 6 hours.

Do we recommend this mode of transportation? Absolutely not!

I rented a bike to travel from Rhodes Town to Ialyssos resort and then used the scooter once more to travel within Rhodes Town. However, there is no cycling infrastructure anywhere on the island.

The sidewalks or roads are not in the best condition, the traffic is heavy and the drivers are not very considerate of cyclists.

City buses

Only D.E.S. Roda's bus routes 3 and 6 are well used for getting around the city.

Both lines leave from the central bus station and circle the entire town along Elli, Windy and Akti Kanari beaches and around the aquarium. They then continue south to the residential areas.

However, these beaches can be reached easily and often more quickly on foot.

Both lines run only once an hour and the ticket costs 1,10 eur.

For detailed information on travelling outside the city, see the chapter Transport on Rhodes.

Taxi

There are official taxi ranks in many places around town and you can stop your car by waving on the street.

The official taxis are safe and run exclusively by meter.

Mobile apps like Bolt or Uber don't work here.

Taxi prices for transport exclusively around Rhodes Town range from around 10 eur to 15 eur.
