The Merlion is the symbol of Singapore - a statue with the head of a lion and the body of a fish that stands right by Marina Bay and "spouts" water into the bay.

It was not created as a historical monument, but as a modern symbol of the city.

  • The lion's head refers to the name Singapore (from the Malay Singapore - "Lion City")
  • the body of the fish is reminiscent of the original fishing village of Temasek

The statue was erected in 1972 and gradually became one of the most famous motifs of Singapore.

We stopped here several times, but always only for a short while.

It's the perfect place to stop briefly for an iconic photo.

Is Merlion Park worth a visit?

Yes, if:

  • you are visiting Singapore for the first time
  • you want an iconic photo with the skyline
  • you have a trip around Marina Bay

❌ Not if:

  • you're looking for a quiet place without crowds
  • you like more authentic places and markets

What to expect on site

  • a small park by the water
  • views of Marina Bay Sands
  • often very crowded (especially in the evening during the Spectra light show, which is best viewed from here)
  • a nice pedestrian promenade along the water

When to go here

  • in the morning - fewer people, better photos
  • evening - lit up city, Spectra Light Show, but bigger crowds
