Getting to Greenland

Greenland dog sledding

Greenland is one of the most isolated islands in the world, yet it is relatively accessible by air, especially from Europe.

There are several international airports in the country, with the main airport, Nuuk GOH, also servicing large transport aircraft on flights to Copenhagen and even seasonal services to the USA and Canada.

Air transport

The only way to get to Greenland is by plane. There are no regular international ferries to Greenland.

There are a total of 5 international airports on the island with regular flights abroad. For information on transport to/from the airport or procedures for changing from international to domestic flights, please see our guides:

  • Nuuk GOH - Greenland's largest airport in the capital city, with most international flights
  • Ilulissat JAV - the airport of the most visited city in Greenland thanks to the famous Icefjord with direct seasonal service to Iceland
  • Kangerlussuaq SFJ - inland airport and popular start of the Arctic Circle Trail trek with direct seasonal service to Copenhagen
  • Kulusuk KUS - airport in a remote part of East Greenland with direct seasonal service to Iceland
  • Narsarsuaq UAK - airport for the warmest southern Greenland with direct seasonal service to Iceland

Currently only 4 airlines fly regularly to Greenland from abroad:

Flight prices and when to book

Due to the still relatively little competition and the high costs associated with flights to Greenland, flights are very expensive.

The average price for return flights from Copenhagen, Canada or the USA is between 850 eur and 1 200 eur.

Bargain deals are most common from Copenhagen, where off-season flights can drop to around 600 eur.

If you are heading to Greenland during the high season from June to the end of August, we recommend buying your tickets at least 3 months before departure.

Regular ferries

International ferries for travelers to Greenland do not currently operate.

Only ocean-going cruise ships have stops in Greenland, for which separate tickets cannot be purchased.
