What travel documents do I need to travel to Greenland? Is a regular ID card sufficient for European citizens or is a passport required to travel to Greenland?

Visa-free entry to Greenland

Greenland is an autonomous country of the Kingdom of Denmark but is not part of the European Union or the Schengen area.

Freedom of movement

Citizens of the Nordic countries can enter Greenland without a visa for any length of time and can live and work here without special permits.

This policy applies to residents of Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Faroe Islands.

Visa-free for 90 days

You can travel to Greenland for a maximum of 90 days without having to apply for any visa or fill in electronic entry permits if you are a citizen of these countries:

  • Europe - Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Vatican City
  • North America - Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominica, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, USA
  • Australia and Oceania - Australia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, New Zealand, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu
  • Asia - Brunei, Georgia, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Timor-Leste, United Arab Emirates
  • South America - Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
  • Africa - Mauritius, Seychelles

Passport or ID card?

Residents of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) do not need a passport to travel to Greenland, but a photo ID is sufficient.

All other travellers, including EU citizens, must have a passport to travel to Greenland.

Validity of travel documents

The validity of the passport must exceed by 3 months the planned date of departure from Greenland.
