Afandou beach

The beach at the resort of Afandou (sometimes spelled Afantou) is one of the longest on the island of Rhodes with a length of 5 km.
Despite the very good accessibility, the beach is not crowded even in high season, one of the reasons may be the lack of facilities.
There is a café or local snack bar by the beach, but classic taverns, restaurants and shops are only in the centre of Afandou, about 2 km away from the beach.
Beach facilities - natural quiet beach
Afandou beach is quite specific and ideal for tourists who don't like to be crowded with other people. The nearest residential development with hotels and apartments is located in the village of Afandou about 1.5 to 2 km from the beach.
Expect virtually no facilities here. Exceptions are a few stalls with sunbed and umbrella rentals and, of course, mini-snack bars with drinks and small snacks. However, you would look in vain for taverns, bars, hotels and shops at Afandou beach.
Most of the beach is orphaned and completely devoid of people.
The surface is mostly pebble and the entrance to the water is gradual only for the first 5 metres or so. This makes the beach ideal for swimming or just simply sunbathing away from the main action.
At the southern end of the beach, the beach connects seamlessly to the resort of Kolymbia and about 5 km north lie some of the most famous beaches of Rhodes - Anthony Quinn Bay and Ladiko Bay. You can get there from Afandou with one transfer in Faliraki by bus or more conveniently by rental car.
Prices of sunbeds and umbrellas
In the summer season, you will find several sun lounger and umbrella hire shops by the beach. Prices for a set of two sunbeds and an umbrella for one day are around 15 eur.
The small town of Afandou
The resort itself can be found about 2 km inland along the main ring road around the island. It consists mainly of low-rise houses and you can enjoy a fairly rich background of small tavernas, bars and shops of all kinds.
You can also buy the usual supplies at several supermarkets.
Accommodation in Afandou
Although the centre of all the action is in the village about 1.5km from the beach, hotels closer to the beach have recently sprung up.
In Afandou you will find mostly apartments and more luxurious smaller boutique hotels. Prices per night for two in high season are around 100 eur.
Of the top-rated apartments at good prices around 85 eur per night, we would recommend the Summer Pearl Apartments in the centre of Afantou (2km from the beach) or the beautiful Sokrates Studios aparthotel in a quiet rural area 300m from the beach.
Holidays with a travel agency - the best hotels
Afandou is a popular destination for many European tour operators who organise holiday packages here, especially to budget small hotels.
Always study the location of the hotel on a map carefully, it can often be more than 3km from the beach!
When planning a holiday with a travel agent to Afandou we would choose from these top rated hotels. View the best weekly deals:
- Afandou Blu *** - a one-star budget hotel 200 metres from the beach in the middle of a rural landscape
- Hotel Blue Sea Oliva **** - a well rated modern hotel 150 metres from the beach at its nicer northern end
How to get there
Afandou beach is easily accessible mainly by car.
By car and parking
Afandou lies on the main west coast road about 20km from Rhodes town. There is a road along the beach with a small promenade where you can park for free, and due to the length of the beach it is never a problem to find a free parking space.
By bus
Ktel Rodou buses run on the main Rhodes - Faliraki - Afandou - Archangelos - Lindos route approximately 1-2 times per hour. Tickets can be bought in cash from the driver, to Rhodes Town cost 2,50 eur.
However, the bus stops are not at the beach, but only in the centre of Afantou.
Timetables can be found on the website: ktelrodou.gr/afantou.
