Windmills

Historical windmills have a long tradition in Rhodes and in Greece in general, and one of the more unknown monuments is the windmills in the port of Mandraki.
The 3 beautifully preserved 15th century windmills were built when Rhodes was part of the Republic of Genoa.
The windmills stand on the eastern pier near St. Nicholas Fortress, which is not open to the public.
Archaeologists have found the foundations of two other windmills and historical maps show up to 18 windmills in the Mandraki port area.
The interiors of the windmills are not accessible, but we definitely recommend a visit to the pier nonetheless. There are nice views of the marina and the harbour of large ocean-going cruise ships.
Our tip: Visit the windmills in the early evening just before sunset, where they are beautifully lit.
