Palace of the Grand Masters

Grandmaster's Palace

The Palace of the Grand Masters of the Knights of Rhodes is the main landmark of the city and the largest and best preserved monument on the entire island of Rhodes.

It is located in the heart of the Old Town and despite its relatively high price, we definitely recommend a visit.

From the Byzantine citadel to the Knights of Malta's headquarters

A Byzantine fortress was built on the highest point of the Old Town as early as the 7th century AD.

The whole area was massively rebuilt into its present form between 1309 and the end of the 14th century, when the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta established his residence here.

Even after the Ottoman Empire took control of the island of Rhodes, the palace was still in use in the almost unchanged form in which it remains today.

Tips for visiting the Grand Master's Palace

The entire 2nd floor is open to the public, where you will find several dozen rooms from both the Ottoman Empire and the Knights of Malta periods.

All the rooms are well preserved and well maintained.

There is not a great deal of artwork inside, and you are more likely to see how the Grand Masters and rulers lived and worked.

A visit usually takes 30-45 minutes.

Admission and opening hours

The ticket price is 20 eur.

You can buy the entrance ticket on the spot with cash or card, or online for the same price on the official website: hhticket.gr.

Online admission is bought at the exact time and the queues at the venue are not very long, so we recommend buying your tickets on the spot.

Opening hours vary according to the season:

  • Summer season from April to October - daily 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Winter season from November to March - daily except Tuesdays 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Official website: archaeologicalmuseums.gr
