Getting around Chalki
Chalki is a small island and the longest walking distances to the well-known beaches are around 5 km.
Most tourists get around Chalki on foot, but you can reach the more remote beaches by water taxi. Transport on the mainland is usually arranged directly by accommodation providers.
On foot
You can reach the beaches of Kania, Ftenagia and Pondemos on foot from the main harbour in no more than 30 minutes.
A longer, steep uphill walk awaits you on the way to Chalki Castle, and the longest route leads to the monastery of Agios Ioannis (a total of 16 km there and back), which is, however, very small and, in our opinion, not at all worth a visit.
Water taxi
Transport by small boats running to a regular timetable is provided by the local company Giannis Express (which does not have its own website).
The boats sail from the main harbour to more remote beaches:
- Kania – 5 eur / return ticket
- Areta – 20 eur / return ticket
- Trachia – 20 eur / return ticket
Minibus
Although in the past there was a public bus service on the island to the beaches and, once a week, to the village of Chorio and the monastery of Agios Ioannis, there is currently no official public transport on Chalki.
The only regular transport is provided by the restaurant on Kania Beach with its minibuses, which connect with the ferries from the port of Kamiros Skala in Rhodes and will take you to the beach in 10 minutes for 2,50 eur / one-way ticket.
Taxis
There are no official taxis on the island of Chalki.
However, you can often arrange with your accommodation provider, for example, a lift to the village of Chorio if you wish to visit Chalki Castle.
