Chorio is a historic village in the island’s interior, situated in a mountain pass between Chalki Castle and the central mountain range.

In the past, Chorio was the main centre of the island of Chalki due to its difficult access and, consequently, its ease of defence. Today, it has just five permanent residents.

Ancient ruins on the steep slopes

This site was inhabited as far back as Ancient Greece, long before our era.

Several archaeological remains of dwellings and temples have survived to the present day, but they are in such a state of disrepair that it is often difficult to tell whether they are the ruins of ancient monuments or simply rocks.

As well as the ancient monuments in Chorio, there is also a pretty little chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary and several houses, one of which even houses a restaurant that is usually open only during the summer months.

How to get there

From the town of Chalki, you can reach Chorio via a 3 km-long concrete road that climbs quite steeply uphill.
