Wat Phra Yai
Wat Phra Yai, known as the Big Buddha, is the most famous monument on Koh Samui.
The 12-metre-high golden Buddha statue stands on a small island connected to the mainland by a bridge and is visible from afar - often even when arriving on the island, as the approach route to Koh Samui Airport passes through Wat Phra Yai.
It's not a place you'd go to Thailand for, but as a diversion between beach activities, Wat Phra Yai is a great place to stay on Koh Samui.
Quick overview
- ⛩ Type of place: Buddhist temple
- Location: north Samui (Bangrak area)
- ⏱ Visit time: 20-40 minutes
- 💰 Entrance: free

What to expect? Mainly the statue and the shops
The dominant feature is a large golden statue of Buddha sitting in the Mara position. A staircase lined with dragons (naga) leads to it, which is one of the most photogenic elements of the whole place.
At the top you will find:
- the main Buddha statue
- smaller altars and statues
- views of the coast and the sea
Down below the temple is a small market with souvenirs and stalls.

The temple is easily accessible, easy to visit and most people spend no more than half an hour here. The atmosphere is more touristy than spiritual, but it's still an active religious site.
It makes the most sense in combination with the surrounding sites, for example:
