Free Wave Market
Freewave Market is a smaller, modern night market next to Fisherman's Village on Koh Samui.
In fact, it's probably not a place you'd plan an entire evening for. But as a quick stop for food or an unpretentious alternative to the larger markets, it works well.
We stopped here more or less by accident - and it ended up being one of the most enjoyable "low-key" places in the whole area.
Quick overview
- π F ocus: mainly street food
- π§Ό Environment: clean and tidy
- π¨βπ©βπ§ Atmosphere: quieter than big markets
- Location: next to Fisherman's Village in Bophut
- β± Visit time: 20-60 minutes
What to expect at Free Wave Market
Free Wave Market is smaller than the traditional night markets, but that's exactly its advantage.
Here you will find:
- π€ seafood and grilled meat
- π Thai food (pad thai, curry)
- π simple international street food
- πΉ drinks and fresh juice
The space is uncluttered, with seating in the middle, and overall feels cleaner and more organized than most markets on the island.
The clean, free toilets at the back of the market are also a plus.
What is Free Wave Market really like?
This is not a "chaotic" Thai market.
Rather:
- A smaller outdoor food court.
- a nice evening place without the crowds.
- perfect for a quick dinner
Compared to larger markets (e.g. Chaweng), there are significantly less people and a quieter atmosphere.
How to connect with Fisherman's Village
Freewave Market makes the most sense as part of an evening at Fisherman's Village.
Typical scenario:
- you walk through Fisherman's Village
- have a drink by the sea.
- you settle dinner right here.
If you're interested in the classic larger night market, check out the Chaweng Night Market too.
Who the Free Wave Market is for
Freewave Market is ideal if:
- you want a quieter alternative to the big markets
- you're looking for a quick and cheaper dinner
- you're staying in the Bophut Beach area
On the other hand, if you're looking for a big, bustling night market with atmosphere, Chaweng would be a better choice.
Transport and accessibility
The market is in the town of Bophut just off the main road.
- πΆ O n foot: ideal from the Bophut/Fisherman's Village area
- π Grab / Bolt: no problem
- π΅ Car / Scooter: easy to park nearby, we parked along the main road where there are wide shoulders. However, it's better to arrive between 18:00 and 19:00 when there is still plenty of space to park.
π Distances:
- Bophut Beach: 2-5 minutes
- Chaweng Beach: about 20 minutes
For us, Free Wave Market was a sure thing for a cheap and good dinner, as we were staying at a hotel about 5 minutes drive away and weren't too happy with the hotel restaurants.
