Chaweng Beach
Chaweng Beach is the most famous and busiest beach on Koh Samui. It offers the whitest sand on the island, the liveliest night scene and the largest concentration of hotels, restaurants, bars and beach clubs with discos.
If you picture turquoise water, palm trees and cocktails at sunset when you think of a holiday in Thailand - you're probably picturing Chaweng.
However, if you don't like too many people and nightlife, try other beaches on the island instead. Or even other islands, such as neighbouring Koh Phangan.
A quick overview
This is how we saw Chaweng beach:
- 🌊 S wimming: the best on the island, the clearest water (especially in the middle and southern part)
- 🏝 S and: fine and white
- 🎉 Atmosphere: the liveliest part of the island, especially in the evening and at night (especially the middle part)
- 🌙 Nightlife: clubs, bars, beach parties
- 🍽 Restaurants: huge choice both on the beach and in the centre of Chaweng
- ✈️ Airport: about 20 minutes
What is Chaweng Beach really like?
The beach is roughly 5 kilometres long and is one of the most beautiful on the island. The sand is fine and light, and the water has a distinctive turquoise hue in good weather.
But beware, especially the northern part of the beach is often prone to algae deposits, especially during the winter season (December-April).
Unlike the northern beaches, the sea here is open, so there may be bigger waves at certain times. However, it is the open horizon that makes Chaweng feel more "tropical" than other parts of the island.
It's also the most touristy area of Samui - which is both an advantage and a disadvantage. It has the most services, but also the most hustle and bustle and lots of people.
👉 If you want a similarly nice beach but slightly quieter evenings, check out Lamai Beach or the more family friendly Choeng Mon Beach.
Chaweng Beach division: where to stay?
Chaweng is not the same everywhere. When choosing a hotel, it's essential to know which part you're choosing.
North Chaweng
Significantly quieter than the centre but still close to the action. A good choice for those who want good access to entertainment but prefer quiet nights.
However, the northern edge of Chaweng is often prone to algae build-up, so only plan on staying in a hotel or lying on sunbeds here, while swimming is better further south.
Central Chaweng
The liveliest part. Largest concentration of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. If you want to be in the heart of the nightlife, this is where you belong.
The middle part of the beach is right on the level of downtown Chaweng, where you will also find a huge shopping mall or perhaps a night market.
South Chaweng
Progressively quieter and less crowded. A good alternative for those who want a beautiful beach but not the complete noise of the centre.
Chaweng Noi
Technically a separate beach to the south of the main Chaweng.
Quieter, more resort-like and very photogenic. Often a better choice for couples or discerning travellers.
Nightlife: clubs, bars and fire shows
Chaweng is the centre of nightlife on Koh Samui. Various big events take place here and it is also, for example, the main venue for New Year celebrations throughout Koh Samui.
Most famous venues:
- Green Mango Club - a legendary club in the heart of Chaweng (not by the beach, but in the centre of town)
- Sound Club Samui - a more modern dance club
- Ark Bar Beach Club - a beach club with regular evening parties
In the evening there are often fire shows right on the beach, especially in the central area. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal - more of a barefoot party on the sand than a formal club night.
These fire shows are free to watch at any time and without any reservations - there are several on the beach every day.
If you live north or south of downtown, it can be surprisingly quiet in the evening.
The best beach clubs on Chaweng Beach
Beach entertainment is just as important as nightclubs on Chaweng. These are our favourite beach bars and clubs.
The normal price of drinks at these clubs is around 220 thb to 280 thb.
Cash and credit cards are common at most clubs.
🍹 Ark Bar Beach Club
The most famous beach club on the island. Sunbeds and DJ during the day, parties on the sand in the evening and regular fire shows. We spent our New Year's Eve here.
- Free entry
- comfortable sun loungers can be booked (prices very high from 5 000 thb to 35 000 thb)
- programme and official website: ark-bar.com
🎶 SEEN Beach Club Samui
A more designer and stylish environment. More of a cocktail and sunset vibe than a mass party.
Famous DJs from all over the world often head here and it has a slightly more premium vibe than ARK Bar Beach Club.
- Free entry
- Comfortable loungers can be booked (prices very high from 10 000 thb to 50 000 thb)
- programme and official website: seenbeachclubsamui.com
🥳 Green Mango
Not right by the beach, but in the centre of Chaweng. It is one of the most famous discos not only on Koh Samui, but in the whole of Thailand.
It's often very crowded and dominated by young people under 25, unlike ARK and SEEN which are frequented by a mix of people across all ages.

Swimming, sea and water sports
Chaweng offers probably the best swimming conditions on Koh Samui.
- Fine sand without stones
- gradual entry into the water
- beautiful sea colour (especially in April-October) and not at the northern end where there is often algae
There can be bigger waves in the stronger winds, but most of the year swimming is very pleasant.
At high tide only a very narrow strip of sand remains of the beach and in some places you can't even walk on the beach at all.
Chaweng has the largest range of water activities on the island:
- 🛥 jet ski
- 🪂 parasailing
- 🛶 kayaking
- 🏄 paddleboards
- 🍌 banana boat
If you're looking for an active beach day, this is where you'll have the most options.

Chaweng as the centre of the island
Chaweng isn't just a beach - it's the main tourist centre of Samui.
Here you will find:
- many tourist agencies offering tours
- scooter rental agencies
- banks and exchange offices
- pharmacies
- large supermarket
- Central Samui shopping centre
- night markets
If you are travelling to Thailand for the first time and want to have everything close at hand, Chaweng is the easiest choice.
In fact, Chaweng is the easiest base if you want to explore the island - tours, beaches and evening activities. For my handy tips on getting around, see my article Transport to Koh Samui.
Who is Chaweng ideal for?
Chaweng is the best choice for:
- first visit to Samui
- those who want a combination of beach and fun
- couples and groups of friends
- travellers who don't want to depend on a scooter
For families, the northern or southern part, or Chaweng Noi, is preferable.
If you're looking for tranquillity and a minimum of tourists, look instead at Mae Nam or Choeng Mon.
I think my favourite beach was Bophut, which is the perfect balance of tranquillity and a lively centre with pedestrianised promenades.

Transport and Accessibility
- 🚗 Car: parking in Chaweng is the worst on the whole island. You can park anywhere along the street, but there are not enough spaces
- the biggest parking lot is by the lagoon, see map (but it's busy with night markets on Thursday-Sunday)
- 🛵 Scooter: practical solution, but there is more traffic in the centre and even with a scooter it can be a problem to park (for example ARK beach club has its own paid parking - 100 thb per day for a scooter)
- 🚕 Grab / Bolt: they work without problems, but in the evening between 20:00 and 0:00 the prices are significantly higher due to high demand
Distances:
- Bo Phut - about 30 minutes
- Airport - 15 to 20 minutes
- Lamai - 30 to 40 minutes
