Wat Plai Laem
Wat Plai Laem is, in my opinion, the most interesting temple on Koh Samui. Unlike the classic Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha), it is much more colorful, photogenic and overall looks more lively.
The temple stands on an artificial pond and combines Thai and Chinese elements - exactly the kind of place that looks a bit "exaggerated" in photos, but in reality will pleasantly surprise you.
Quick overview
- ⛩ Type of place: Buddhist temple
- Location: north Samui (near Bangrak / Choeng Mon)
- ⏱ Visit time: 30-60 minutes
- 💰 Entrance: free
- 📸 Photogenicity: one of the best on the island
What you will see here
The main landmark is a huge statue of the goddess Guanyin with 18 arms, standing in the middle of the pond. Each arm holds a different symbol and the whole is quite impressive.
The other major landmark is the fat laughing Buddha Budai.
Other attractions:
- Several temple buildings
- bridges over a small lake
- fish in the pond (can be fed)
- detailed, colourful architecture
Unlike most temples on Samui, here you feel like there's always something to look at.
What is Wat Plai Laem really like?
Honestly: this place was more interesting to me up close than the Big Buddha.
- More details and visual elements
- better for photos
- quieter atmosphere
It's not a huge complex, but unlike Wat Phra Yai, you won't be here for more than a few minutes.
Is it worth visiting Wat Plai Laem?
✅ Yes, if:
- you want a photogenic temple
- you like colourful and less traditional places
- you want to combine multiple stops in the north of the island
❌ More likely not, if:
- you are looking for an authentic and quiet temple without tourists
- you have no time and prefer beaches

How to connect your visit with the surrounding area
Wat Plai Laem is ideally located for a short 'mini tour':
- Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha)
- Choeng Mon Beach (quiet beach)
- Bangrak Beach
You can do the whole thing in half a day without stress.
Transport and parking
You'll find the temple in a pretty backstreet and it's not very well signposted, so you'll need directions if you're driving here on your own.
- 🚗 Car / scooter: free parking right at the temple
- 🚕 Grab / Bolt: no problem available
The temple is only a 20-minute drive from both the airport and Chaweng Beach, so it's a handy stopover right after arrival or before departure.
