Getting around Ko Samui

Koh Samui

What is the best way to get around Koh Samui? What is the cheapest way to get around and when is it worth renting a scooter or car? Does public transport even work on Samui?

The reality is simple - Koh Samui has very limited public transport, so most tourists tackle transfers by a combination of scooter / taxi / Grab / rental car.

Rent a scooter

In Thailand, you drive on the left.

On Koh Samui, the scooter is the most common and also the most practical mode of transport.

The island is relatively small, the roads around the coast are in good condition and most places of interest are easily accessible.

Why rent a scooter - the advantages

  • fastest transfers (no waiting)
  • easy parking anywhere
  • ideal for exploring less touristy places
  • cheap solution for longer stays

Not everyone is suitable for a scooter - disadvantages

  • roads can be slippery after rain
  • roads are very steep inland
  • if you rent a more powerful scooter (recommended) for each passenger separately, renting a car will be cheaper
  • most tourist accidents in Thailand are on scooters

What to watch out for

  • you officially need an international driving licence
  • if you only have "A1" on your licence, you can only rent the weakest scooter, which is absolutely unsuitable for hill trips
  • a helmet is compulsory (and checked)

Prices and rental companies

You can rent a scooter practically anywhere - hotels, smaller rental shops and even right on the street.

  • 150 - 250 thb / day
  • more powerful models: approx. 400 thb / day

Booking in advance usually doesn't make sense. Even during peak season you can find a scooter literally on every corner.

❗ I only recommend a scooter if you already have experience. Samui is quieter than Phuket, but it's still Asia.

Rent a car

A car is the most underrated option on Samui - yet it makes a lot of sense.

👉 Ideal if:

  • traveling with 2-4 people
  • you want comfort (air conditioning, safety)
  • you are planning multiple transfers (e.g. between beaches or hotels)

Compare car rental companies at Samui airport

Pros:

  • Air conditioning
  • safety
  • comfort on longer journeys

Disadvantages:

  • worse parking at the beaches
  • higher price than a scooter

Taxi, Grab, Bolt

This is the most sought-after transport on Koh Samui - and the biggest reality check.

Classic taxis, as well as the Bolt and Grab mobile apps, work absolutely everywhere and at all hours of the day and night. That's right.

But unlike other regions in Thailand, and including Phuket or Bangkok, Grab, Bolt and classic taxis are very expensive here!

In fact, the prices are more similar to taxis in Western Europe.

Does Grab or Bolt work on Koh Samui?

Yes - Grab and Bolt are the main apps.

Uber works poorly on Koh Samui, but both Bolt and Grab have great availability in all areas of the island.

Prices compared to taxis are not much lower though.

The advantage, of course, is the ability to pay with a card stored in the app - mobile apps are great in this regard.

What are the waiting times?

Usually within 5-10 minutes in the main areas, outside the coast and in the mountains you can wait up to 30 minutes. However, Bolt or Grab will always arrive.

Drivers routinely accept contactless payments via the mobile app, no problem at all.

What are the differences from regular taxis?

Small in price.

You always have to haggle with taxis, though, so if you're not experienced in this area, Grab or Bolt will probably work out cheaper.

Is Bolt or Grab better?

Generally Bolt has lower prices, but on Koh Samui there isn't as much difference as say Phuket or Krabi where Bolt tends to be significantly cheaper.

Classic taxi

There are official red and yellow taxis on Koh Samui. They are everywhere. Even where you wouldn't expect them.

What are the pros and cons compared to the Grab / Bolt mobile apps?

✅ Pros

  • in city centres they are everywhere, no waiting
  • If you know how to haggle well, taxis can be cheaper than Grab or Bolt

❌ Disadvantages

  • always without a meter
  • prices are agreed in advance before the ride
  • cash only

👉 If you have dates, Grab a Bolt is almost always a better and more secure option.

How much does a taxi cost?

  • Short ride under 20 minutes: 250 thb to 350 thb
  • longer cross-island rides: 600 thb to 700 thb
  • prices can be even higher at night, especially from the famous nightclubs in Chaweng or Bophut

Can I take a taxi to the airport?

Yes. Taxis, Grab and Bolt can both drop you off at the airport outside the departure lounge.

However, Grab, Bolt and regular taxis are not allowed to wait for arriving passengers in the airport area. For them, there are special airport taxi services, public transport or hotel transfers.

How to get from the airport? Find out our experience in the article Transportation to/from Koh Samui USM Airport.

Organised tours

If you're staying in one hotel and your goal is a purely relaxing beach holiday, it makes sense:

  • upon arrival on the island, book a hotel transfer or Grab/Bolt to the hotel
  • and arrange the transfers as part of the paid organised excursions

For example, if you go to Ang Thong National Park or Pig Island, the tour always includes a transfer from the hotel to the dock and back.

We sorted out all the tour online in advance through GetYourGuide.

  • Always no problem
  • communication perfect through the app
  • multiple local agencies to choose from
  • prices better than dealing locally or through the hotel

Songthaew ("local transport")

Songthaew is the closest "public transport" to Samui.

These are pickup trucks with benches that function as shared taxis. And that is the main problem.

Because on Koh Samui, the vast majority of songthaew are more of a tourist attraction than local transport for locals.

Because most locals use scooters and don't use songthaews at all.

How do they work?

  • They go around the whole island on the main road
  • they don't have a timetable
  • they stop on a wave
  • you can get off anywhere

Most often you will use them between:

  • Chaweng ↔ Lamai
  • Chaweng ↔ Fisherman's Village
  • Lamai ↔ Na Thon (port)

Prices

  • Short routes: 150 thb to 200 thb
  • Longer: 200 thb to 300 thb

Tourists are often told more - always ask beforehand. Prices for locals range from 20 thb to 50 thb, but as a tourist you will rarely be able to negotiate a similar price.

Reality

  • cheap but not clear
  • no air conditioning
  • more of a tourist attraction than a means of transport

If you're on the island for a short time, you'll usually end up on the Bolt or Grab mobile apps.

The airport line - the only real public transport

There are 2 songthawe lines that run to the airport, which can be described as real transport and not just a tourist attraction.

In fact, there is a flat fare 150 thb and they run every 30 minutes from the airport.

Detailed info including photos of the stop - transport from Koh Samui airport.

Public transport (buses, train) - reality

On Koh Samui there is no classic public transport.

None:

  • buses like in Phuket
  • clear lines
  • metro or trains

That's why most people ride Grab, Bolt, scooter or rented car.

How to combine the two (best strategies)

So how do you transport yourself around Koh Samui and what all do you need to sort out in advance?

  • You want flexibility → scooter
    • no need to book in advance, just on the spot
  • you are 2-4 people or you are scared on a scooter → car
  • you don't want to drive → Grab / Bolt
    • justdownload the app on your mobile and have mobile data for the whole stay
  • you don't want to deal with mobile data → classic taxi
    • butyou have tobargain or expect a higher price

Where to stay by transport

Transportation depends a lot on where you live:

  • Chaweng, Bophut / Fisherman's Village - best accessibility, most Grab, close to everywhere
  • Lamai - quieter but still good connections, especially to the jungle, viewpoints and waterfalls

👉 Choice of location will greatly affect how much you spend on transport.

Choose a hotel by location

Our experience

Transportation is handled very differently on Koh Samui than in the big cities.

Bolt / Grab / taxi will always save you. They are everywhere and available at all hours of the day and night. But unlike the rest of Thailand they are really expensive.

👉 Want to travel around the island?

  • A scooter (no need to arrange ahead) or a car (book online, like the standard booking.com)

👉 Do you want to have beach comfort?

  • Bolt / Grab / taxi
  • Occasional organised tours that provide complete transport

We have combined both.

For the first half of our stay, we wanted the comfort of a beachfront hotel combined with trips to nearby islands, which we always booked through GetYourGuide.com.

For the second half of the trip, we rented a car (because I'm scared on a scooter). I describe the detailed experience in the article Car rental on Koh Samui.
