Choengmon Beach
Choeng Mon Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the north-east of Koh Samui. It lies just about 20 minutes from the bustling Chaweng Beach, but the atmosphere is completely different – quieter, more intimate and also more local.
If you’re looking for a combination of a lovely beach, plenty of facilities and a quieter spot, Choeng Mon is one of the best choices on the island.
What’s more, you can walk to the nearby islet of Ko Fan Yao – even at high tide, when the water is only about waist-deep.
Quick overview
- 🌊 Swimming: calm, shallow sea; the beach is wide enough even at high tide
- 🏝 Sand: fine, light-coloured
- 👨👩👧 Atmosphere: peaceful, family-friendly
- 🍹 Facilities: small bars and restaurants, stalls
- ✈️ Airport: approx. 10 minutes

What is Choeng Mon Beach really like?
Choeng Mon is a small bay, which means:
- calmer waters without big waves
- a compact area (you don’t get the feeling of an ‘endless beach’)
- fewer people than at Chaweng
Compared to other well-known beaches on Koh Samui, there’s a more local atmosphere here, with small food stalls and vendors selling souvenirs or beach equipment.
Thai massages are available to the public at several locations (approx. 350 thb per hour)
The sand is fine and the water is usually calm, making it one of the best beaches for swimming on Samui.
The view faces east (so you won’t see any sunsets here), overlooking small islets and the open sea.
What to expect on the beach
Choeng Mon has a rather intimate atmosphere:
- 🍽 a few restaurants and beach bars
- 🏨 mainly budget or mid-range resorts right on the beach
- 🌴 a peaceful atmosphere without noisy parties
Don’t expect big beach clubs or nightlife like in Chaweng – here, evenings are spent sitting down to dinner rather than dancing on the beach.
Who is Choeng Mon ideal for?
Choeng Mon is one of the best choices on the island for:
- families with children (shallow water)
- couples looking for peace and quiet
- travellers who want a lovely beach without the hustle and bustle
If you’re looking for more of a lively atmosphere, restaurants and evening entertainment, Chaweng Beach or Bophut Beach would be a better choice.
Transport and accessibility
- 🚗 Car / scooter: no problems; there’s free parking for plenty of cars right in the middle of the beach
- 🚕 Grab / Bolt: they work reliably
📍 Distances:
- Chaweng Beach: approx. 10–15 minutes
- Fisherman’s Village: approx. 25 minutes
- Airport: approx. 10 minutes

Is Choeng Mon Beach worth a visit?
✅ Yes, if:
- you’re looking for a quiet and lovely beach
- you’re travelling with children
- you prefer a smaller, resort-style atmosphere
❌ Probably not, if:
- you’re looking for nightlife and parties
- you want a large beach with lively facilities
💡 Alternative:
If you’re after a similarly quiet beach but with more restaurants, have a look at Bophut Beach. We liked it better than the better-known Chaweng.
