Paleokastritsa

Paleokastritsa

The town of Paleokastritsa is situated on the western coast of the island, sandwiched between six promontories that form six picturesque bays.

The hilly nature of the coastline, covered with cypress and olive trees, gives the place a unique atmosphere and it is not for nothing that many Corfu residents say that Paleokastritsa is the most beautiful place on earth.

Beaches and swimming

Paleokastritsa is a paradise for bathing enthusiasts with beautiful scenery, a very rugged and photogenic coastline and crystal clear waters.

The local beaches are small but clean and have all the necessary facilities. You will come across many tavernas and bars, sunbed and umbrella rental (prices around 12 eur per day for a set of 2 sunbeds) and offers of boat trips or water attractions.

The clear water and rugged bottom make the place ideal for snorkelling. The beaches are mostly a combination of sand and small pebbles and the entry into the water is gradual, but can be rocky at times.

Right in the town you'll find the beaches of Agia Triada, Agios Spiridon and Liapades, which are the most classic with sand, plenty of space and all the facilities.

If you don't mind a more challenging entry into the water but want to enjoy the beautiful scenery all the more, head west of the village to Ampelaki beach.

On the other hand, on the eastern outskirts of the village you will find the ever-populous pebble beaches of Glyko and Rovinia.

Further beyond Rovinjia beach, visit the beautiful, photogenic Limni beach, which forms a narrow pebble link between the mainland and a small island.

In 15 to 20 eur you can then take a boat to one of the most beautiful beaches in Corfu - Paradise Beach.

Sights and attractions

As well as beaches and spectacular views, there are several interesting sights or attractions to visit in Palekastritsa.

  • Paleokastritsa Monastery - an 18th century religious building, otherwise known as Panagia Theotokou, stands on one of the promontories high above the sea and is freely accessible. It is a 20-minute walk from the town centre,
  • Corfu Aquarium - Just below the monastery, visit the smaller aquarium which provides a comprehensive view of Corfu and the surrounding area below sea level. Admission for adults costs 9 eur, children pay 5,40 eur, see the official website.
  • The view from Lakones village - The best view of the whole of Paleokastritsa and its bays is from Lakones village, which lies high above the sea about 6 km down the road from the sea.
