The small town of Paleokastritsa lies on the island’s west coast, nestled between six headlands that form six picturesque coves.

The hilly coastline, covered with cypress and olive trees, lends the place a unique atmosphere, and it is not without reason that many Corfu residents claim that Paleokastritsa is the most beautiful place on Earth.

Beaches and swimming

Paleokastritsa is a paradise for those who love swimming in places with beautiful scenery, a very rugged and picturesque coastline, and crystal-clear water.

The local beaches are small but clean and have all the necessary facilities. You’ll find plenty of tavernas and bars, sun lounger and parasol hire (prices around 12 eur per day for a set of two sun loungers), as well as boat trips and water sports on offer.

Thanks to the crystal-clear water and the varied seabed, the area is ideal for snorkelling. The beaches are mostly a mixture of sand and small pebbles, and the entry into the water is gentle, though it can occasionally be rocky.

Right in the town itself, you’ll find the beachesof Agia Triada, Agios Spiridon and Liapades, which are the most traditional, with sand, plenty of space and all the necessary facilities. 

If you don’t mind a slightly more challenging entry into the water but want to enjoy the beautiful scenery all the more, head west of the village toAmpelaki Beach. 

Conversely, on the eastern edge of the village, you’ll find the always deserted pebble beachesof Glyko and Rovinia.

Further beyond Rovinia Beach, visit the stunning, picture-perfect little beach of Limni, which forms a narrow pebbly isthmus between the mainland and a small islet.

For 15 to 20 eur, you can then take a boat to one of the most beautiful beaches on Corfu – Paradise Beach.

Sights and attractions

As well as the beaches and stunning views, there are also several interesting sights and attractions to visit in Palekastritsa.

• Paleokastritsa Monastery – an 18th-century religious building, also known as Panagia Theotokou, stands on a headland high above the sea and is open to the public. It’s a 20-minute walk from the town centre,
• Corfu Aquarium – Just a short distance below the monastery, visit this small aquarium, which offers a comprehensive glimpse beneath the surface of the sea around Corfu and the surrounding area. Admission for adults is 9 eur, and children pay 5,40 eur; see the official website.
• View from the village of Lakones – The most beautiful view of the whole of Paleokastritsa and its bays can be seen from the village of Lakones, which lies high above the sea, about 6 km along the road from the coast.

How to get there

It’s a 23 km drive from Corfu Town, taking around 35 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.

Although Paleokastritsa is squeezed into a narrow strip between the sea and the steep mountain slopes, you’ll find plenty of free parking spaces in several public car parks.
