Tarnim Magic Garden
Tarnim Magic Garden, also known as Secret Buddha Garden, lies high in the hills in the middle of Koh Samui and feels like a world apart from the beaches down by the sea.
While most of the island is all about sand, bars, discos and resorts, here you're suddenly in the jungle, by a stream and among dozens of stone statues.
We drove here without much expectation - and it ended up being one of the most peaceful stops on the entire island.
What it's like here: silence, jungle and statues.
Don't expect an attraction in the classic sense.
Buddha's Magic Garden is not a spiritual place or a temple, but the private garden of a former durian farmer.
What you'll find here is more like this:
- a small garden scattered on a hillside
- dozens of stone statues of Buddha and animals
- a stream and small waterfalls
- a minimum of people
The whole place has a bit of a forgotten atmosphere. It's not perfectly manicured or "instagrammable" - and that's what makes it interesting.
Unlike temples like Wat Plai Laem or Wat Phra Yai, you usually won't meet anyone here.
Allow about 30-60 minutes for your visit.
Entrance fees and opening hours
Admission is charged 100 thb and can only be paid in cash.
Open daily 9:00-18:00.
You will also find free clean toilets and a small food shop by the ticket office.
How to get there
This is where the traffic makes half the experience.
The road here is winding mountain roads through jungles and durian and rubber plantations.
Secret Buddha Garden is in the middle of the island and we recommend navigation for the journey as the signage is not very good.
- Chaweng - 25 km / 60 minutes
- Lamai - 11 km / 30 minutes
- Bophut - 29 km / 60 minutes
🚗 Car - the best option
The road is narrow, winding and very steep in places, but with a car it is without much stress.
Parking is right at the entrance for free and without any problems.

🛵 Scooter - only if you have experience
Technically it's possible, but:
- steep hills
- sharp turns
- sometimes worse surface
If you are not sure, better not.
🚕 Grab / taxi
It works, but there's a catch:
- Higher price
- return pickup can be more complicated - the location is remote and you can wait more than 30 minutes
👉 If there are two of you, renting a scooter or car makes sense.

How to connect it with the surrounding area (the best option)
Tarnim doesn't make much sense as a standalone trip.
Ideal combination:
- Namuang Waterfalls
- Inland viewpoints
- short stops along the way
👉 Make it a half day trip to the mountains, not just one stop.
Does it make sense to come here?
✅ Yes, if:
- you want peace and quiet away from the main tourist routes
- you have your own transport
- you want to see a different side of Koh Samui
❌ More likely not if:
- you only deal with "top highlights"
- you have no convenient way to get here
💡 Alternative:
If you want an easier stop without dealing with traffic, consider Wat Plai Laem instead.
