Wat Ratchathammaram (Red Temple)

Red Temple

Wat Ratchathammaram is just a few minutes from the famous Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks and also the Overlap Stones, but the atmosphere is completely different.

While the rocks tend to be crowded, here you'll often see few people - or none at all.

Red Temple without crowds

The main building is distinctive at first glance:

  • the deep red facade
  • traditional Thai architecture
  • rich decoration

The whole place looks calm and uncluttered. You don't have to rush anywhere or weave through people.

But there are other small buildings, a beautiful white and gold pagoda and a monumental staircase with statues of two cobras.

๐Ÿ‘‰ It takes about 10-20 minutes to get to the bus stop.

Why stop here when you're driving by

Wat Ratchathammaram (Red Temple) is no reason to drive halfway across the island.

But if you are in the Lamai area, it makes very good sense:

  • it's just off the main road
  • you can park practically at the entrance
  • it's a quick visit

๐Ÿ‘‰ The perfect complement to a visit to Hin Ta & Hin Yai or Overlap Rocks, which are right across the street.

Entrance fees and opening hours

The Red Temple is accessible free of charge.

The grounds are open every day from 7:00-17:00.

Although there is no one controlling entry, please respect the spirituality of the place and observe the dress-code - i.e. no cruises, tank tops or short pants above the knee.

How to get there

Is Wat Ratchathammaram worth it?

โœ… Yes, if:

  • you want a quieter temple without people
  • you're driving past Lamai
  • you like such "inconspicuous" places

โŒ More likely not, if:

  • you plan to go just for this temple
  • you want a distinctive or iconic monument

๐Ÿ’ก Alternative:
For larger and more famous temples consider Wat Plai Laem or Wat Phra Yai.
