Hin Ta Hin Yai
Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks are among the most visited places on Koh Samui.
At first glance, these are just rock formations by the sea. But in reality, most people head here because their shape is strikingly reminiscent of male and female genitalia.
It's a bit quirky, a bit of a tourist classic - and one of the places where almost everyone stops for a while.

What will you actually see here?
The main "attractions" are two rocks:
- Hin Ta (Grandfather)
- Hin Yai (Grandmother)
One resembles a male, the other a female - and this is what their popularity is based on.
Really? We only saw the resemblance in the male genitalia and didn't distinguish the female one at all. Did you also visit this place and manage to take a picture of the "grandmother"? Let us know in the comments with your photo!
The place doesn't look controversial though.
Of course, tourists take selfies here because it is one of the most famous Instagram spots in Thailand.
But the whole coastline is beautiful, with its big, bright rocks that remind a bit of the Seychelles.
๐ The whole visit takes about 10-20 minutes.
Atmosphere of the place
Unlike the quieter places in the hinterland here:
- more people
- small souvenir stalls
- refreshments
But at the same time, just walk a few meters to the side and you will find quieter parts of the coast with a view of the sea.
How to get there
There's no need to plan anything complicated here. This is one of the easiest stops on Koh Samui.
๐ Car / ๐ต Scooter
- Parking right at the entrance (30 thb per car)
- quick access to the rocks (about 2 minutes walk from the parking lot)
The turn off the main road is signposted, expect a very narrow road, but you will only go a few hundred metres along it.
๐ If you want to drive to more places around Lamai, your own transport will make the whole day much easier.
๐ Grab / Bolt
- readily available
- waiting time usually does not exceed 10 minutes
๐ Distance:
- Lamai Beach: about 5 minutes

What to visit nearby
Hin Ta & Hin Yai are rarely visited separately.
The most common combination:
- Lamai Beach
- View from Overlap Stones
- Wat Ratchathammaram (Red Temple)
- trip inland - Na Muang Waterfall 1
๐ Perfect as a short stop along the way
Is there any point in coming here?
Hin Ta & Hin Yai may not be the kind of place you'd fly to Koh Samui for, but we loved it and we certainly don't regret stopping here.
The coastline is very pretty, the accessibility is good and it's an interesting and slightly funny attraction.
โ Yes, if:
- you drive past Lamai
- you want to see one of the most famous places on the island
- you don't mind a more touristy atmosphere
โ Not really, if:
- you are short on time and have priorities
- you are looking for peace and quiet without people
๐ก Alternative:
For a quieter stop, head inland, for example to Tarnim Magic Garden.
