Chaweng Night Market
Chaweng Night Market is one of the most popular night spots on Koh Samui.
If after a day at the beach you're looking for an easy and cheap place to grab dinner, street food or just the atmosphere of an evening market, this is where a large portion of tourists from the Chaweng Beach area end up.
The Chaweng Night Market is a street-food market focused mainly on food, but you'll also find a small clothing or souvenir section.
What to expect at Chaweng Night Market
Markets are all about the food. You'll find dozens of stalls with different types of cuisines:
- 🍜 Thai noodles and pad thai
- 🍤 grilled shrimp and seafood
- 🍗 satay and grilled meat
- 🍕 pizza, burgers and other international dishes
- 🥭 mango sticky rice and desserts
- 🍹 cocktails and fresh juice
The atmosphere is relaxed - plastic tables, music and a mix of tourists and locals.
Prices are mostly lower than the restaurants around Chaweng's main street.
When to go to the market
Chaweng Night Market is only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There is a large free car park on site for the rest of the week.
The market usually opens around 4pm and runs until around 10pm.
Tip: Take cash with you - most stalls do not accept card payments. The nearest ATM is in the Central Samui shopping centre across the street.
💡 Alternative
We visited other night markets on Koh Samui that are open every day:
- Fisherman's Village
- Freewave Market
- Lamai Night Market
Where Chaweng Night Market is located
The market is just off the main road and about 15-20 minutes walk from the beach.
Most of the visitors come from the hotels around Chaweng Beach, so it tends to be quite busy in the evening.
If you live further afield, it's easy to get here using Grab or Bolt - see the article Transport to Koh Samui for more on transfers.
Is Chaweng Night Market worth it?
Yes - if you're looking for a cheap and quick dinner or want to sample several different dishes in one place.
I really liked the Chaweng Night Market - it's big enough and varied enough, and surprisingly authentic at the same time.
But if you're looking for a more stylish evening with cocktails and music, the beach clubs right on Chaweng Beach or the restaurants in Fisherman's Village have a better atmosphere.
Where to stay nearby
If you want the markets and the beach within walking distance, your best bet is accommodation right in the Chaweng area.
Hotels in this part of the island also have the best access to restaurants, bars and excursions like Pig Island.
Chaweng Night Market vs Fisherman's Village Night Market
If you're planning an evening market on Koh Samui, you'll probably come across two of the most famous places - Chaweng Night Market and Fisherman's Village Night Market.
What's the difference between them? The atmosphere is quite different.
Chaweng Night Market
- mainly focused on street food
- Open only Thursday, Friday and Saturday
- casual atmosphere
- ideal for a quick and cheap dinner
Fisherman's Village Night Market
- Larger area - more of a pedestrian shopping street than a market
- Held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but many brick-and-mortar shops are open every day
- As well as food, you'll find souvenirs, clothes and local produce
- a much more photogenic environment
If you live on Chaweng Beach, Chaweng Night Market is the easiest evening stop.
If you want a bigger and more atmospheric market, it's worth a trip to Fisherman's Village.
