Homm Chura Samui: design, tranquility and reasonable price

Cottages in the area of Homm Chura

We wanted to be on Koh Samui for New Year's Eve, but we also didn't want to start our vacation with an overpriced resort.

We were looking for something stylish, quiet and reasonably priced. A hotel that offered atmosphere, a good location and didn't feel corporate.

And so we ended up at Homm Chura Samui - a hotel that is part of the Homm boutique chain, part of the Banyan Tree group and therefore All Accor.

After five nights here, we continued on to the Panviman Resort Koh Phangan and finally ended our stay at the W Koh Samui.

This makes our comparison of the different resorts all the more interesting.

Quick summary after our stay

  • ✅ For whom - couples, quieter part of Chaweng, good value for money
  • ❌ For who not - those who want a perfect beach right in front of the hotel and luxury
  • 💰 Price level - mid-segment
  • 🏆 Would we stay again? Yes, as the first part of a holiday for a few days or just before departure

One-Bedroom Suite: only one thing makes sense

We stayed in the highest category One-Bedroom Suite.

A basic Deluxe Room goes for approximately 100 eur on normal dates when booked at least 3 months in advance, while a One-Bedroom Suite starts from 160 eur.

The price difference is relatively small - and for that you get a separate bedroom, significantly more space and a better outdoor seating area.

We also got an upgrade to the version marked "Sea View", normally sold for about 350 eur.

We paid about double the normal price during New Year's Eve - for 3 nights total 960 eur.

Koh Samui is expensive and sells out quickly on New Year's Eve. All the more reason we wanted a hotel that wasn't just a "fallback option" but a place where we would have a good start to the whole holiday.

Honestly? The sea view is more of a marketing tagline. You can catch a glimpse of the sea through the trees, but the main advantage is the proximity to the beach and pool, not the panoramic view.

And that's good to know before you book.

In the context of the whole trip - after Homm Chura we went to Panviman and then to W Koh Samui. And it is here that you realise just how good value for money Homm Chura offers.

It's not a villa with a pool. It's not an iconic resort.

But for the price of one night at the W, you can stay here for five days.

How did I book my stay?

Despite earning points for the All Acoor program, I didn't book directly through all.accor.com this time. Even knowing that in that case, I won't earn any points.

At the time of booking, there was a Revolut promotion going on where I earned 10 RevPoints for 1 eur when I paid through RevolutPay on Booking.com. And I can convert the RevPoints to airline miles, which is currently more important to me than earning points with Acoor.

What does the room look like and what's included?

The rooms are very well-designed and reminiscent of Japanese Zen-style, which fits in perfectly with the overall relaxed atmosphere of the resort.

The One-Bedroom Suite has a wooden terrace with two sun loungers and a small clothes dryer.

The entrance hall

The room includes a TV, sofa, desk, fridge and small wardrobe.

There is really little storage space and I consider this one of the biggest weaknesses of the room.

Bedroom

The bedroom has a spacious bed with a good quality mattress but quite small bedside tables.

There is one drawer on each side of the bed, but no USB ports.

Bathroom

The bathroom is partially outside, so always close the bedroom door - otherwise you'll have mosquitoes in the room all night.

The bathroom area is huge with two sinks, a toilet, a shower and one oversized bathtub.

The bathroom is enclosed on four sides but lacks a ceiling, which is a deliberate design feature.

The amenities within the room are a little inferior compared to hotels in the same category.

  • kettle with tea and instant coffee (there is no classic coffee machine)
  • free bottled water, replenished daily
  • fridge - but no minibar
  • wi-fi - stable and sufficient even for video calls / work
  • safe + hair dryer (no iron)
  • bathrobe
  • insect repellent

Location and beach: excellent accessibility, the weakest part of Chaweng

Homm Chura is located on the northern edge of Chaweng Beach.

This is great news in terms of tranquillity. The main hustle and bustle of central Chaweng is far enough away not to disturb you, but still close enough to walk to.

A 10-15 minute walk puts you in the heart of restaurants, bars and nightlife. Or in 5 minutes by Grab/Bolt - the reception is just off the main road.

But now the reality of the beach.

Within Chaweng, this is probably the weakest part of the coastline. It often holds seaweed, even during high season when central Chaweng is considerably cleaner.

Plus, you have to expect that during high tide the beach at the hotel will completely disappear.

For many travelers, the proximity to Koh Samui USM airport, which is only 15 minutes away by taxi, is certainly an advantage. In addition, the hotel is not on the runway centerline, so there is no noise from planes.

The pool: the heart of the hotel

The centre of the common area is the beautiful and immaculately maintained pool with clear water. And right by the sea, so the views are spectacular!

You'll walk to the communal pool too, as none of the villas have their own private pool.

There are plenty of sunbeds around the pool, which are free to hotel guests. As well as towels - you can pick these up at the bar next to the pool.

As the hotel beach is flooded by the tide twice a day, the sunbeds by the pool are also used for swimming in the sea.

The pool is elegantly nestled among palm trees and greenery - stylishly designed, but not the gigantic resort type.

It's more of a chill vibe than a mega-slide park, and that's exactly what we appreciated on our first few days on Koh Samui.

There's a poolside bar where you can order drinks or snacks - but the prices are pretty high. A cheaper option can be found in the restaurants about 20 metres from the hotel on the beach.

We also tackled food at the 7-Eleven directly opposite the reception on the main road.

Atmosphere: what makes the difference here

Homm Chura is not a hotel that will wow you with a wow effect.

It's a smaller, quiet boutique resort set in green surroundings. Away from the hustle and bustle of tourism. And very close at the same time.

It's much more of an island than a global chain.

The atmosphere here is very relaxed, not bound by luxury. But at the same time, you can feel the quality of the service and the design of the rooms.

For me, absolutely great value for money.

And even though the entrance to the resort is directly from the main road, the individual rooms and bungalows are separated from the town by a small rock mass, so the hustle and bustle of cars and motorbikes doesn't reach here at all.

Breakfast: simple, local and tasty

The breakfast restaurant is located at the reception and main entrance. It has a nice terrace, but the view of the sea is obstructed by mature trees.

The menu is quite simple, but you can find pretty much everything you need for breakfast:

  • Egg station, where they prepare eggs in 5 different ways (but the preparation was much better at the W Koh Samui )
  • cold cuisine (only 2 types of cheese and cold cuts - one day we even saw spoiled ham)
  • fruit and vegetables including local vegetable salads (very good!)
  • pastries (only a minimum of interesting sweet pastries)
  • good juices
  • crisps, granola and chocolate muesli
  • automatic coffee machine only

The hotel prides itself on growing its own vegetables, fruit and spices in the gardens below the restaurant.

Other services and practical operation

Homm Chura doesn't have to have a gigantic resort programme - and that's the charm of it.

  • Room service - works 11:30-21:00 by scanning a QR code, which you can find in your room
  • Laundry service - to wash 1kg of dirty laundry costs 159 thb (for comparison, public laundries anywhere on the street have prices from 50 thb for 1kg and there are a huge number of them on Koh Samui)
  • Massages - right on the hotel beach next to the pool, prices from 300 thb for 1 hour
  • Small souvenir shop - only designer stuff like bags or clothes
  • Free parking - if you have a car or scooter in front of the reception (open outdoor parking)

You will also find a very small gym with quite old equipment at the top near the reception. However, as you often can't run on the beach due to the tide, the hotel gym may be the only chance to work out at some parts of the day.

Alternatives to Homm Chura Samui

Homm Chura made sense to us as a quiet start to our holiday. But if you're looking for a similar type of quieter stay, these are the most logical alternatives we considered too:

And if you want to stay right in Chaweng but have better swimming in front of the hotel, it makes sense to choose the middle of the beach (the central stretch tends to be cleaner than the northern end).

Does Homm Chura make sense?

From the perspective of our entire trip:

  • Homm Chura = a quiet boutique hotel with comfortable amenities and a good location.
  • Panviman = resort with a view and a different vibe of absolute tranquility
  • W = icon of relaxed luxury and top service

Homm Chura wasn't a wow resort for huge money to begin with - but it was the perfect start to the whole trip:

  • ✅ a realistic price for quality accommodation
  • ✅ style without ostentation
  • ✅ functional and very nice design amenities
  • ✅ very peaceful and quiet atmosphere
  • ✅ close to the airport
  • ❌ the beach is not the top stretch of Chaweng
  • ❌ in-room amenities worse (no coffee maker, no minibar)
  • ❌ weaker choice at breakfast
  • ❌ none of the villas have their own private pool

If you want design, tranquility and an authentic island vibe with walkable restaurants and bars, Homm Chura is one of the best options on Koh Samui at this price level.
