Toji
To-ji is a historic Buddhist temple on the southwestern edge of downtown Kyoto, best known for its iconic five-story pagoda. At 55 metres tall, it is the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan.
The temple was built in 796 shortly after the founding of Kyoto as the imperial capital and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
For most visitors, To-ji is more of a short stop than a half-day destination.
A big advantage is the location only about 15 minutes' walk from Kyoto Station, making it easy to get here before taking the train, for example.
✅ Yes, if:
- you want to see the tallest pagoda in Japan
- you have some time near Kyoto Station
- you're looking for a less touristy temple than those in Higashiyama
❌ More likely not if:
- you have very limited time in Kyoto
- you want to see the city's most famous temples
- you are planning a programme mainly in the historic districts
💡 Alternative:
If you have more time for temples, most visitors tend to head to the Higashiyama area or the iconic Kiyomizu-dera temple.
The tallest pagoda in Japan
Dominating the entire area is the pagoda, which dates back to 1644 and was rebuilt by Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu after the original structure was destroyed by fire.
The pagoda is visible from much of southern Kyoto and is one of the most photographed historical structures in the city.
In addition to the pagoda, the grounds also contain the main temple halls and smaller gardens, which are at their best in spring during sakura season and in autumn when the leaves turn color.
The interior is opened only a few times a year on special occasions.
How to include in the itinerary
To-ji is well suited as a short stop on a transfer.
Typical combinations:
- before leaving Kyoto Station by train
- after visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha
- when taking the JR train to the Arashiyama area
Most visitors spend approximately 30 to 45 minutes here.
