Tofuku-ji
Tofuku-ji is one of the most famous Zen temples in Kyoto and is especially famous for its beautiful autumn colours. The temple complex was built in the 13th century and is now one of the largest Zen temples in the city.
The main attraction is the Tsutenkyo Bridge, which runs across a valley full of maple trees. In autumn, the entire valley turns shades of red and orange and the site is one of the most photographed locations in Kyoto.
The temple is just minutes away from Fushimi Inari Taisha, so the two sites are often visited in one trip.
Is Tofuku-ji worth a visit?
✅ Yes, if:
- you want to see one of the most beautiful temples in Kyoto in autumn
- you are interested in Zen architecture and gardens
- you plan to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha Temple
❌ More likely no, if:
- you only have a few hours in Kyoto
- you are travelling outside the autumn colour season
- you only want to see the most famous sights
💡 Alternative:
Another famous Zen temple is Ginkaku-ji or the bamboo forest gardens at Kodai-ji Temple, which are pretty even outside of autumn.
The Tsutenkyo Bridge
The wooden Tsutenkyo Bridge is one of the most iconic spots in the entire temple.
It spans a small valley that is planted with hundreds of maple trees.
It is from here that the famous photographs of the red "sea of leaves" during the autumn season are taken. But expect large crowds of visitors at this time.
In addition to the bridge, the Zen gardens near the main Hojo building are also worth a visit and are among the most interesting modern Zen gardens in Kyoto.
The sightseeing tour across the bridge, through the gardens and around the temple buildings is quite short and can be done even by seniors.
How to include in the itinerary
Tofuku-ji is very often combined with a visit to Fushimi Inari Taisha Temple.
A typical itinerary might look like this, for example:
- morning Fushimi Inari Taisha
- then Tofuku-ji Temple
- continue to Higashiyama area and Kiyomizu-dera Temple
Most visitors will spend approximately 45 to 60 minutes here.
Admission and opening hours
- Entrance fee: approximately 1 000 jpy (includes Tsutenkyo Bridge and gardens) or 600 jpy (bridge only without gardens)
- Open: approximately 9:00-16:00
Payment is by cash only, as in all Kyoto temples.
The most common mistakes
1️⃣ Arrive at peak autumn times
November weekends are among the busiest times in all of Kyoto.
2️⃣ Come just for the bridge
The Zen gardens at the Hojo complex are among the most interesting in Kyoto.
3️⃣ Don't combine a visit with Fushimi Inari
Both places are very close to each other and make sense in one visit.
If you want to see multiple temples during a short visit to the city without complicated planning, there are also organized tours that combine the main sights of Kyoto.
