Arashiyama

Arashiyama

Arashiyama is a historic area on the western outskirts of Kyoto that is best known for its bamboo forest, Tenryu-ji Zen Temple and the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge over the Katsura River.

Unlike neighborhoods like Higashiyama, this is not a single landmark, but an entire tourist area full of attractions that can be explored in an afternoon or a full day.

Is it worth visiting Arashiyama?

Yes, if:
You want to see the most famous natural scenery in Kyoto and plan to visit the bamboo forest.

❌ Rather no, if:
You only have one day in Kyoto and you mainly focus on the historical temples in Higashiyama district or the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine.

💡 Alternative:
For the historical atmosphere of old Kyoto, the Higashiyama area may be more interesting.

What to see in Arashiyama

Arashiyama is not one landmark, but a combination of several very famous places.

The most important ones are:

These four places form the basis of most visits to the area.

The main street stretching from Togetsukyo Bridge to JR Station is surrounded by souvenir shops, restaurants or cafes.

The romantic Sagano train also runs from Arashiyama. You can return, as I did, by boat on the Hozugawa River.

How much time to reserve for Arashiyama

If you want to see the main attractions, count on at least:

  • 3-4 hours - bamboo forest, Tenryu-ji, bridge
  • Half a day - add Monkey Park
  • full day - scenic train or river cruise

The whole area can be conveniently explored on foot.

The most common mistakes

1️⃣ Thinking that Arashiyama is just a bamboo forest
It is actually a larger area with temples, a park with monkeys and beautiful nature.

2️⃣ Arriving here in the middle of the day
Both the bamboo forest and Togetsukyo Bridge tend to get very crowded around midday.

3️⃣ Underestimate the distances
Although everything seems close, the whole tour can take a few hours.

How to get there

Arashiyama is located on the western edge of Kyoto about 30 minutes from the city center.

It's definitely the quickest way to get here by train or Randen tram.

Nearest station:

  • Saga-Arashiyama (JR)
  • Arashiyama (Randen tram)
  • Arashiyama (Hankyu)

Arashiyama accommodation

When does it make sense to stay here? If you have already explored downtown Kyoto and plan to explore the nature, mountains and small temples in the west of the city, then it makes sense to stay in Arashiyama for 2 or 3 nights.
