Kawaramachi
Kawaramachi is Kyoto's main shopping and entertainment area. If you want to see the modern side of the city - the shops, restaurants, bars and busy intersections - you'll most likely end up here.
You'll find the largest concentration of hotels and bus lines here, so Kawaramachi is also a great logistics hub.
The district is spread around the Shijo-Kawaramachi intersection and the street of the same name, just minutes from the Kamo River, historic Pontocho Street and the Gion district.
Unlike the traditional parts of Kyoto, Kawaramachi is primarily a practical city centre - a place to eat, shop or enjoy the evening life.
Is Kawaramachi worth a visit?
✅ Yes, if:
- looking for restaurants, bars and shops
- you want an evening in a lively part of town
- you live in central Kyoto
❌ More likely not if:
- you're looking for a historical atmosphere
- you only have a short time in Kyoto
- you mainly want temples and monuments
💡 Alternative:
For a traditional atmosphere, go to Gion or Higashiyama historical area instead, which are very close to here on foot.
What you can actually find here
Kawaramachi is primarily the commercial centre of the city. Much of Kyoto's shops, restaurants and nightlife are concentrated here.
For example:
- the large department stores Takashimaya, Marui or the popular Don Quixote store.
- shopping galleries and fashion stores
- dozens of restaurants and izakaya
- bars and nightspots
- Apple Store
The busiest place is the Shijo-Kawaramachi intersection, which is one of the liveliest spots in the city.
The most common mistakes
1️⃣ Expecting a historical atmosphere
Kawaramachi is a modern city centre, not a traditional district.
2️⃣ Ignoring side streets
The most interesting bars and small restaurants often lie off the main street.
3️⃣ Use only as a transfer point
In the evening, Kawaramachi is one of the liveliest parts of Kyoto.
