The Golden Kinkakuji Temple was built in 1397, damaged and rebuilt several times, and is now in the form it was built in the 14th century.
Along with 16 other sites in Kyoto, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Golden Temple in the Japanese Garden
The main building of the Kinkaku-ji complex attracts the attention of tourists from all over the world.
The facade of the building is covered with 0.5 μm thick gold leaf.
The use of gold is particularly symbolic. The gold was meant to purify the soul from negative thoughts towards death.
The Golden Pavilion stands on the shore of a small lake in the middle of a beautiful Japanese garden, which is at its most beautiful in the second half of November, when the leaves on the trees are turning colour.

Is it worth visiting Kinkaku-ji?
If you're only planning 1-2 days in Kyoto, we recommend reading my 3-Day Visit Itinerary and choosing which temples to visit in advance.
✅ Yes, if:
- you are visiting Kyoto for the first time
- you want to see one of Japan's most iconic buildings
- you love the meticulous Japanese gardens
❌ More likely not, if:
- you are looking for a peaceful spiritual atmosphere
- you want to go inside the temple (the interior is not accessible)
- you have limited time and prefer places where you can stay longer
- you don't like crowds
Honestly: Kinkaku-ji is visually beautiful, but the visit is relatively short and the movement is along a one-way route along with a crowd of other tourists.
💡 Alternative
If you're looking for a similarly iconic but quieter atmosphere, consider visiting Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion).
It's not covered in gold, but offers beautiful gardens and often a more relaxed pace of visit.
Entrance fees and opening hours
- The grounds are open every day from 9:00-17:00.
- Ticket price is 400 jpy and can be paid by cash or card.
Access is only allowed to the gardens and it is not possible to enter the interior of the Golden Pavilion.

The most common mistakes when visiting Kinkaku-ji
1️⃣ Waiting to enter
The interior is not accessible. You can only see the Golden Pavilion from the outside.
2️⃣ Come in the middle of the day without expecting crowds
Kinkaku-ji is one of the most visited places in Kyoto. It is most crowded between 10:00-15:00.
3️⃣ Don't plan for traffic
The temple is located on the northern edge of the city and is not directly next to the train station. It is often necessary to combine the subway and bus. For details, see the Transportation in Kyoto chapter.
4️⃣ Come here just for "one photo" without any other plan.
North Kyoto offers more places that can be combined into a half-day itinerary (such as Ninnaji or Ryo-an-ji).
How to include Kinkaku-ji in your itinerary
Kinkaku-ji lies on the northern edge of the city, off the main pedestrian axis between Gion and Higashiyama.
The most common combination:
- 🌿 Kinkaku-ji + Ryoan-ji + Ninnaji + downtown shopping in the evening (northern temple route)
- 🏯 Kinkaku-ji + Nijo Castle + Gion in the evening
- 🌅 Morning visit to Kinkaku-ji → afternoon Arashiyama area
If you only have 1 day in Kyoto, moving north can be time consuming. In that case it makes sense to stay in the eastern part of the city and visit only the main sights of Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Fushimi Inari.
For a detailed breakdown by number of days, see How many days to spend in Kyoto.
How to get there
Kinkaku-ji lies on the northern edge of Kyoto is only accessible by city buses. The bus stop about 100 meters from the entrance is called "Kinkakuji-michi".
If you're planning on moving around the city for several days, it's worth finding out in advance whether a day ticket on public transport makes sense. See the chapter on Transport in Kyoto for more information.
