Kamigamo-jinja Shrine
Kamigamo Shrine is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kyoto. Its history dates back to the 7th century and, together with Shimogamo Shrine, it is part of Kyoto's UNESCO-listed historical sites.
It lies north of the city centre, off the main tourist routes - and that's its biggest advantage.
Personally, I liked Kamigamo-jinja perhaps the most of all the shrines in Kyoto.
Why I liked Kamigamo-jinja so much
Unlike the crowded temples, the grounds feel open and natural.
The shrine grounds themselves are small and the interior is not accessible.
But you'll see lots of small wooden buildings and wine barrels.
I was most surprised by a small park with a stream right next to the shrine. Grass, water, trees, minimal people and a very relaxed atmosphere - a place where you really sit down and slow down.
Compared to the most famous shrines, I felt much more peaceful and less "touristy" here.
Also beautiful is the approximately 150 meter long path through the small torii gates (similar to those at Fushimi Inari Shrine, but significantly smaller).
The small hill offers a nice view of the northern suburbs of Kyoto.
Is Kamigamo-jinja worth a visit?
✅ Yes, if:
- you're looking for a really quiet shrine without crowds
- you want to experience an authentic atmosphere away from the main tourist axis
- you plan to explore the northern part of the city
❌ More likely not if:
- you only have 1 day in Kyoto
- you want an iconic place like Fushimi Inari
- you only stick to the main "must see" sights
💡 Alternative:
If you're looking for a more famous and photogenic shrine, consider Fushimi Inari. If you want a similarly tranquil atmosphere closer to the centre, Shokoku-ji Temple may be more suitable.
Kamigamo is not a "highlight for everyone". But that's what makes it retain a strong and very pleasant atmosphere.
How to include Kamigamo in your itinerary
Kamigamo-jinja combines very well with:
- 🌳 S himogamo Shrine
- 🌿 Kyoto Botanical Gardens
- Daitoku-ji Shrine
Ideally, include it as part of the northern walking route along the Kamo River.
If you're planning on the northern part of the city, check out the map of Things to See in Kyoto or the Transportation in Kyoto chapter, where we address transfers between areas.
Entrance fees and opening hours
- Entrance to the site is free
- usually open from sunrise to sunset
How to get there
Kamigamo-jinja is on the very northern edge of Kyoto so expect to drive an hour to the centre.
Two bus lines stop outside the entrance:
- Line 4 - direction Kitayama subway station ( -> quick trip to downtown and Kyoto Station), Kyoto Botanical Gardens, Shimogamo Shrine, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kawaramachi shopping district
- Line 46 - direction Daitoku-ji, Senbon Kitaoji (-> transfer to buses to Kinkaku-ji), Nijo Castle
