Vatican in a nutshell

Vatican City

Vatican City is the smallest independent state in the world, but also one of the most visited places in Europe.

In less than half of one square kilometre, you'll find some of the most famous sights on the planet - St Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican Museums and the iconic St Peter's Square.

Although the Vatican is an independent state with its own Pope, post office, railways and security forces, most visitors don't even notice the moment they cross the border between Italy and the Vatican.

Whether you're tempted by the climb to Michelangelo's dome, the masterpieces in the Vatican Museums or the unique atmosphere of the centre of the Catholic world, you'll find a surprising number of attractions in such a small area.

Just be warned - especially in high season, the Vatican is one of the busiest places in Rome and it pays to plan your visit well.
